Hi! I’ve been really stressed over the past couple of months. I got into the Honors UNCG and UNC-Chapel Hill and I can’t choose where I want to go. Half my friends and family tell me to go one place and the other half say its better to go somewhere else. I know they are both good schools academically. I want to major in either political science or somewhere in medicine (I’m really indecisive if you can’t tell) and I’m not sure which school is better for those majors. I also don’t know what the school environments would be like for me (a minority) and if they’re safe. I’m also really torn between whether I should stay in Greensboro and help my family or live on campus in Chapel Hill. I have until May 1st to make a decision. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, especially if you’ve been in a similar situation.
UNC is better for both those majors I believe.
How is this even a question? Obviously family obligations are important, but UNC is such an incredible school and if you have the opportunity to go, you should take it. There are great programs for both political science and pre-med paths, and amazing research or internship opportunities relating to medicine. UNC is really great if you want to be any kind of doctor. I’m sure Greensboro is good too and I can’t assess which would be the best fit for you, but Chapel Hill is just leaps and bounds better in so many ways. The campus life and academics are both amazing and the school is very highly ranked and well regarded. In terms of safety and diversity, I know nothing about UNCG but I can say that there is a lot of great diversity at UNC and the area is very safe as well.
chapel hill is much safer than greensboro. but do be prepared to work your butt off at UNC. If you can do well there you will do well afterward.
Based on your question I think UNCG is a better fit for you.
UNC chapel Hill is vastly superior for political science and is one of the top public universities in the country overall. Many people must envy your success Congratulations!
Thank you so much!
UNC is safe. That being said, there are things that you occasionally hear about and you should always make wise decisions ( don’t walk alone at night etc). This advice is true regardless of which school you choose. You expressed concerns about being a minority on campus. The UNC campus is very welcoming.
If you need to stay home and help your family then it might make sense to attend UNCG. If this is not the case, and if your parents are allowing you to decide, then I would choose Chapel Hill. It’s a fabulous school that will give you plenty of opportunities in political science and medicine/premed etc.
which did you pick?
I do not understand why this is a debate at all to be honest. UNC Chapel Hill vs UNC Greensboro? Chapel Hill is in a different league academically, socially, and athletically than Greensboro. No offense to anyone who goes to Greensboro. I do not know much about it. There is a reason UNC Chapel Hill is the flagship and a public ivy, among one of the best national research universities there is. Chapel Hill degree holds much more weight. It is just a fact. I welcome any debate, but the facts are the facts. UNC is nationally known and Greensboro simply is not. Go to Chapel Hill and surround yourself among the brightest students.
No disagreement with anything you said regarding the status of the schools. It’s the soft matters which may make a difference. A “lesser” school may be a better fit, there may be family obligations, etc. that make one better for a particular individual. Sometimes its all about setting a student up to succeed which may mean choosing something different.
Closing thread. The OP posted in April and has not returned. S/he had to deposit somewhere months ago, so presumably the decision has been made.
