I’m choosing classes for junior year soon. I was wondering what is more important for college admissions, rigor of my courses (more AP and Honors) or my GPA? If my GPA is a 3.7-3.8 after taking many Honors and AP classes, does that make me look better during admissions? Realistically, what would be a good GPA for a good engr. college?
So far my schedule for next year looks like:
-AP US
-AP Government and Politics
-AP Psychology
-Hnrs. Pre-Calculus or AP Calc BC
-Hnrs. Physics
-English 11
-Spanish 3
My plan for senior year:
-AP Chem
-AP Physics
-AP Calc BC or Multivariable Calc (Highest math class that can be taken during high school)
-Hnrs. English 12
-Spanish 4 (Hnrs. or Regular)
What should I change/add?
Remember my planned major is Engr. (Aero or Mech)
Thank You in Advance
How is PreCalc and BC something you choose between? If you haven’t taken PreCalc yet, then you have to before you take BC or AB.
Colleges want to see you take rigorous classes and maintain a good GPA. That being said, take the # of AP classes you feel you can handle. 3 AP’s and 2 honors classes is plenty rigorous. Good Luck and it looks like you are on track.
@mrnephew I can take Precalculus over the summer and get into BC as a junior. I still haven’t decided.
If you take Precalc over summer, then I don’t think BC is the best decision. Summer courses tend to be a bit brief in everything, and BC goes in depth. You might want to consider AB instead.
@mrnephew Would I have to take Calc BC after that?
@ritvikbiswas
Yes. Calculus AB is the college equivalent of calc 1, and BC is calc 1 and calc 2. Multivariable is calc 3. They must be taken in that order.
If you’re very very talented in math, and have a very good algebra 2 and trig foundation already, I say go for it. But you might wanna study a bit outside of the summer course, unless it’s just ridiculously rigorous.
It could be a VERY bad idea to jump straight into BC. It’s really not worth wrecking your GPA just to show that you can take classes over the summer, but again this all depends on your mathematical ability. I know my friend skipped from IB Math HL I to multivar as a freshman -_-
Not necessarily… I’m in AB this year and I don’t have to take BC next year. I’m taking stats.
