It's my senior year of high school and I recently checked my transcript online to see if everything was correct but it occurred to me that my cumulative average was much lower than I expected. During freshman year my last report card average was an 89%, Sophomore year it was a 93% and junior year it was a 95%. Therefore when I average these three numbers, I would get a 92% but my average on my transcript says 89%. I also took honors classes and ap classes as well. I'm listing all the classes I took from my freshman year - junior year. Please let me know if they averaged it correctly or not. I'm very nervous.

You should ask your school for their policy on calculating these averages.

The policies seem to vary based on school/district. The transcript usually has classes from middle school if they are being used for graduation from high school. Some districts count everything on the transcript, some will leave out extra classes not needed for graduation and some leave out those from middle school from averages while others do average them.

You don’t have the same number of credits each year. There are more in fresh/soph years than junior so you can’t just average your three averages. It’s also possible your school uses both semesters, and you are only using the second semester. I have no idea how your school weighs honors and APs either.

I’d suggest asking your GC how they got the average they did.

First off, ask your guidance counselor to explain how your GPA was calculated.

The courses you took in 8th grade are probably on your transcript because of some state or city mandate. That happened to my son and daughter; their math and spanish classes from 8th grade appeared on their high school transcript (because they were advanced honors classes that students normally take in high school) and were averaged into their high school GPA. The same is probably true for your GPA.

There must be a reason why the school calculate a different average than you do. Cumulative GPA is not a simple average of GPA from each year but a Grade Point Average. It depends on the credit hour of each grade. Usually a semester course would have half the credit of a year long course. I am not sure if you indeed have more credit hour for Freshmen/Sophomore or just because you have more semester courses.

Thank you for your help. I would speak to my GC but there are 5000 students in my school and since it is the beginning of the year, it is nearly impossible to speak to my GC without missing an entire day of school. Anyways I’m glad to know that the colleges recalculate the GPA using the core academic classes. But does that apply to any college or is just specific ones?
