In my high school, I have tried to take AP Physics, but unfortunately it never fit in my schedule. Do I need prior knowledge of physics to be a computer engineer? I have been admitted to SLO as a computer engineer, however I’m scared that not taking physics can have a negative affect on my future at SLO. I have taken AP Calculus AB, and I’m one of the top student and understand the subject well.
My questions are this:
Does SLO offer an introductory to physics course for students in my situation?
If not, what should I do to prepare myself?
I had to drop physics this semester. That’s because I never had taken physics before. If you really want to study over the summer start reading fundamentals of physics. That way you’ll be ahead and it will make a lot of sense.
I can’t imagine this is specific to SLO, just all engineering majors. No, you do not need physics knowledge before attending college but it would be a big help. Physics will be your first taste of the difficulties of engineering curriculum. If you are moderately intelligent and a hard worker you will be fine.
Physics is a support class for Computer Engineering at SLO. You will be expected to take 4 quarters of Physics while you are there, but do not need to have had it beforehand. Check out the major flowchart at flowcharts.calpoly.edu to see what the recommended classes are for the major.
