Hey guys I have a really bad dilemma here. I am deciding on Rutgers and NYU Poly and I really want to choose Rutgers over NYU Poly, but everyone keep steering me towards NYU Poly.

Here's the breakdown: I'm going into civil engineering and hopefully enter a masters for architecture. Now the reason why I want to go so bad to Rutgers is that I'm instate, my Grandparents basically live 3 miles away from Busch (the engineering campus) and with all financial aid it comes to be $24,500 which is almost a full ride (~$6000 loans from federal government).

For NYU Poly, I have to go there for about $32,000 a year and I'm in the General Studies Program, which is there like their 'Catch-Up' program, which ultimately makes me feel like I'm being held back b/c I have to get 24 credits before I take my major. But my parents keep urging me to go to Poly b/c of the name and easy minor build ups along with all the accolades they 'claim' to have (4th for engineering really?) along with Rutgers having a horrible scene including their horrible teachers.

I really don't know. I really want to go to Rutgers for about 2 years and transfer, but my dad thinks its impossible. Quick breakdown and help guys?

@NYU2013: I know right! My parents say they will help, but I feel like it’s not going to be by a lot. And the 62% graduation rate I was on FAFSA for NYU-Poly scared the crap out of me!

If your parents will pay everything for NYU Poly, then it might be OK. My concern with that school is that you aren’t starting in your major. What happens if you don’t get into your major after a year or two?

Rutgers is a fine university, you have been accepted directly to your major, and your out of pocket is 6k per year which you can cover with a Stafford loan and a summer job. I really don’t see what could be wrong about that. It isn’t like NYU engineering grads make any more money than Rutgers grads!

You see well my parents think that the name of NYU Poly will get me better jobs and pay, when I see that Rutgers is higher up on the engineering list than NYU-Poly.

Rutgers is much less expensive than NYU Polytechnic. (Are your parents unwilling to pay the full cost difference for NYU Polytechnic?)

You got into your major at Rutgers but not NYU Polytechnic.

And:

Rutgers has a better reputation in engineering.

Rutgers has a better reputation overall (NYU Polytechnic is not the same as NYU).

So what argument is there for NYU Polytechnic in this situation?

I don’t know… I kind of feel that there might be potential in NYU-Poly in the near future. I mean some girl at the school got a all cost paid [travel and living expenses] internship at Dell over the summer and I feel like I’ve never seen anyone from Rutgers getting those sort of opportunities…

The life at Busch I hear is great but is amazing and I hear NYU-Poly is great too. At this point the quality of living makes a good factor too, but the better factor is which will give me better opportunities. I feel like my ignorance is making miss a vital point… or maybe I hit all the points?

Honestly, Rutgers is cheaper, has a better reputation for engineering and you will enjoy yourself significantly more. I have heard life at NYU poly isn’t the best. Rutgers is a great diverse campus. If you want to go out and have fun there is always something going on.

NYU Polytechnic does not seem to have much in the way of career survey information other than claims about its high ranking in the Payscale survey (which is skewed by its mix of mainly well paid majors relative to schools with a broader selection of majors).

You can ask the schools’ career centers if they have more information about your major’s graduates’ placement rates and employer recruiting activity.

It looks like your parents wouldn’t need to pay one cent if you go to Rutgers, because you could cover the remaining costs on your own. This means that you don’t need their approval if that is really where you do want to study.
