I am a student studying in my final year in Australia ( I will be graduated by December) and really want to do petroleum engineering in UT Austin. But the thing is that the application process in U.S is very VERY different to that of Australia. We don't have to do essays and Standardized tests. I tried to apply in the TEXAS online thing but it asked me my major. In Australia, when we apply for a University, we apply through a course for e.g PE. So I put my major as Physics (should i change?). I have yet to sit for ACT test. I found about the policy of automatic admission of a student if he/she is in top 8% of his/her class. I was wondering whether this policy applies to international applicants? My real problem is that schools in Australia don't really give out any GPA or class ranking. In the end of year 12, we are given a national rank. Could someone tell me what qualifications and achievements will i have to obtain in order to create a strong application? What are international student profiles like? What kind of ACT score do i need? Is it better/easier to transfer to UT Austin? I have plenty of EC. ANY HELP WOULD GREATLY BE APPRECIATED AND I WOULD FOREVER AND EVER BE IN YOUR DEBTH

Are you senior now?

If you pick engineering as your major, you will see petroleum engineering as a choice. You are seeing physics because you probably chose natural sciences school.

The rank does not necessarily apply to international students but they will consider your SAT or ACT scores for comparison.

The American colleges go mostly by your high school grades and use any measures such as subject tests in SAT, AP and/or IB scores to determine your strength of curriculum, if they have not had any experience admitting students from your school in the past. If you are a senior this year, I suggest you take some subject tests also in October.

Thanks for the reply. Yes i am a senior. The Online Texas thing didn’t give me engineering as an option. I think it was because I was applying in Spring time. For some reason it doesn’t give me an option to apply in the 01 DEC 2013 fall. i only had the option to apply in spring idk why? I was planning to take the ACT in October. How much study would I have to do? 10hrs? 20hrs? what kind of score do i need? 36?30? And I have never written college essays before. what are they like? I have seen the topics. Do i have to write it as if I am doing an english assignment, where i will use imagery, similes and metaphors or just normal formal english? I read somewhere that it is good to incorprate humour in it? English is not my best subject and I am really worried about the Essay part. Do they count alot? and wht type of EC do i need? Also does the automatic acceptance apply to international students?

Again, i really appreciate the help!

When do you complete schooling?

UT deadline is usually Dec 1 for next year. They seem to admit some in spring also but I don’t really know if it comes with a second deadline or if they admit freshman students to all majors.

you should wait for new app for 2014 fall. Why are you trying to apply for spring? You will be automatically turned down without scores anyway.

Have you seen this?

Thanks for the reply. For some reason I cannot apply for Dec 01 in 2013. idk why? It only gives me the option for selecting spring. According to the website, I can submit my scores by 31st of DEC. So, should i take my ACT in October and try applying in 01 Dec or should I like wait for 1 year and maybe go to the best uni in Australia and apply as a transfer student. And does the automatic admission apply to international students?

Thanks Anyways! :D

When can i apply for fall 2014? Please Help

What you are reading is incorrect. The deadline for spring 2014 is October 1st. They are not going to give you an admission with an incomplete application.

When are you finishing your high school?

Looks like the application is up to start filling out.

i will finish high school on the 28th of November 2013. I was hoping to apply for the Summer/Fall deadline, which is at 1st Dec. Is that possible?

The application for Summer/Fall 2014 will open August 1, 2013.
The essay topics will be different, they just changed them.

Essay A: Describe a setting in which you have collaborated or interacted with people whose experiences and/or beliefs differ from yours. Address your initial feelings, and how those feelings were or were not changed by this experience.
Essay B: Describe a circumstance, obstacle or conflict in your life, and the skills and resources you used to resolve it. Did it change you? If so, how?
Essay C: Considering your lifetime goals, discuss how your current and future academic and extra-curricular activities might help you achieve your goals.

You should definitely apply to a few other schools both in US and home because UT has few spots for International students especially for a competitive major like PE.

For PE, the other schools in Texas to consider are A&M and Houston.

What about Texas Tech?

Also, most of Texas public universities don’t require any essay.

UT and A&M need essays as far as I know. I think the essays are mostly the same across the schools but I think there are some differences between UT and A&M under some requirements.

Texas Tech is a good engineering school. I don’t know if they are as close to the industry or not. Most oil companies are head quartered near Houston and some in Dallas.

My friend’s daughter is at Texas Tech PE program. Internship/employment opportunities for students are excellent.

Texas Tech has some international students too, but I really don’t know where they seek employment.
I know that UT PE program has a lot of international students from Middle East and Central Asia, and I believe they usually work in their home countries.

And I just checked ApplyTexas.
UH - no essay required
Texas Tech - essays are optional

I think there are plenty of opportunities for OP in Asia Pacific as an Australian for employment and may be even internships. Many of the major companies have subsidiaries everywhere.

I could be wrong (my kid applied only to UT couple of years ago) but I thought UT and A&M have essays and many accept the same essays without specifying their own.

When my daughter applied (she applied only to UT) I looked up essay requirements at ApplyTexas for all Texas colleges, out of pure curiosity, and I was quite shocked to find out that there were very few colleges that required any essay, usually only 1.
I believe, UT Austin and A&M College Station are the only 2 colleges that require 2 essays. Rice uses Common application.
