I’m an in state junior who is looking to apply to UT (or A&M) for petroleum engineering. Obviously it’s one of the most competitive majors in Cockrell and probably the entire university but what do they look at for admission into the major? I’ve heard SAT/ACT scores hold high value as well as rank. If anybody is in Petroleum engineering could you please share your scores and any other helpful information? Or if you know about their requirement and admissions could you help me out here?
I am currently a freshman in PE at Cockrell. In state, class rank 31/809. ACT math 35, combined English/essay 31. Those are the factors that go into the Academic Index formula. As I recall my Academic Index score was 3.81. I put a lot of effort into my essays. ECs were varsity soccer four years and team captain as a senior. ECNL club soccer four years, Young Life and some math and science tutoring. I am also female.
In 2015 and this year 90 spots were accepted out of about 1400 applications.
Thank you @K20903 . Pretty scary acceptance rate at about 6.5%, yikes.
@PrimeMeridian , I don’t think the US will make the mistake of nuking any country again but in all seriousness, UTs program is the best in the nation so even with the oil prices where they are, PE should still be a good major. I’m also considering chemical engineering however and that’s easier to get in at UT compared to PE.
But it would be pragmatic to hedge your bets and not graduate with a specialized Pet Engr degree. The petroleum industry hires MANY TYPES of engrs, not just Pet Engrs.
@sean191297 Well I’m still a junior this year so I’ll be applying in the summer but not for petroleum engineering but mechanical. I can’t say my exact final stats at the moment since even I don’t have them yet but I can give you some fairly accurate predictions. Final rank: top 10% and predicted SAT: 1520 (getting results March 23), my first time around on the SAT I got a 1460.
