HELP - I need to contact an admissions officer!

Hey everyone,

I need to talk to a Yale admissions officer very quickly because of the admissions deadline, but the admissions office is closed and I did not receive any answers for my emails yet.

Any idea how I could reach someone?? Every idea is appreciated! (Concerns freshman/transfer admission.)

This will give you the email of your regional rep:

Other than that, the admissions office may be closed until after the New Year.

Is it a question some of the parents on this forum could answer?

The transfer admissions deadline is March 1. This makes me think you might have a question about applying as a transfer after having applied for the freshman class. That’s definitely in the realm of this board’s knowledge.

Thanks for asking. My question is whether I can apply to Yale as a freshman.

I am from Germany and after my graduation from high school in 2010, I studied mathematics for one year at the University of Hamburg, but did not complete the amount of courses a first-year student ordinarily completes. All in all, I earned 37 ECTS-points (European Credit Transfer System).

When I contacted a Yale admissions officer several weeks ago, I was told I could apply as a freshman to Yale, based on the following excerpts from [Transfer Program | Yale College Admissions](<a href=“Transfer Application Process | Yale College Undergraduate Admissions”>Transfer Application Process | Yale College Undergraduate Admissions)

“If by the end of the current academic year you will have completed less than one year of full-time college study*, you should apply through the freshman admissions process. If you are admitted as a freshman, work done after secondary school graduation but before matriculation at Yale may be accepted (up to a maximum of two course credits) with the approval of the appropriate director of undergraduate studies at Yale.”

“*For Yale’s purposes, a full year of college credit would be at least 8 transferable course credits (most courses in Yale College are term courses that carry one course credit). Two full years mean a maximum of 18 transferable course credits. Please read the section below on Transferring Credit for more information.”

However, I discovered that [Frequently Asked Questions - International Applicants for Freshman Admission | Yale College Admissions](http://admissions.yale.edu/faq/international-students-faqs) states:

"Am I allowed to apply as a freshman if I have already started at another university?

You may apply as a freshman if you have completed no more than one term or semester at another university. If you have completed more than one term or semester at another university (but no more than two years), you may apply as a transfer student."

Therefore, I am slightly confused because I was told on the phone that I could apply to Yale as a freshman…I just don’t want to miss out on an opportunity…

Sounds like the Admissions person either didn’t know that you were an Intl. applicant, or they didn’t realize that there’s a difference in the definition of fr vs. transfer between domestic and Intl. applicants (I didn’t until now).

I understand your confusion, if the definition of an Intl. transfer is different, they should state it on their Transfer section, not just under the Intl. fr. section as one would often not think of looking there.

Based on your quotes from the website, I’m inclined to think you should apply as a transfer. BUT I understand your confusion since the admissions officer did say that you could apply as a freshman - even though he may have been confused himself, the fact remains that he/she confused you and that is kind of Yale’s fault.

Therefore, I wonder if it would be possible for you to submit your application for the freshman class by the regular deadline (in 2 days or whatever it is), then contact the admissions office again as soon as it reopens, point out the discrepancy on their website, and re-ask your question. If it turns out that you cannot apply as a freshman despite what one admissions officer previously said, I don’t see why you couldn’t withdraw your freshman application and then submit a transfer application by the March transfer application deadline.

Thanks to everyone for giving me advice. I just received an email from a Yale officer telling me that I am eligible to apply as a freshman. She told me that the language on Yale’s website is indeed confusing, so probably they’ll change it.

It feels great to be able to apply as a freshman. Thanks again for helping me! :)
