Help! I need UT admissions guidance. Thanks. :).

Dear Thread-Goers,

I'm a Senior currently attending a private school in Houston, Texas and my situation is as follows:

My Freshmen/Sophmore year was completed in a public school with an Engineering Academy where my GPA was about a 4.7/6.0 while taking Honors and Pre-AP classes. (Yeah, I know. I was kind of lazy. My attitude changed later on.)

My Junior year I transferred to a private school, and they did not have any Honors of Pre-AP/AP classes, so I just took the standard classes. Because they only had Arabic, I had to learn a new foreign language and so my total GPA turned out to about a 3.0/4.0.

My school is very small scale, so I've already completed all of the electives which the school offers, and because of this the school administration is allowing me to go to HCC (Houston Community College) for the entirety of my senior year, while finishing one or two extra credits that I needed to complete.

I am planning on taking Government and Economics, along with Chemistry and a few other classes I've already taken that I had a B or so in and doing very-well in them, God willing. Because they are dual-credit classes, they will replace any class that I've already taken such as Chemistry on my High School transcript, along with giving me a college credit.

I spoke with HCC and they said that they will most likely give me a HCC/College GPA to use when applying for colleges and I called HCC and UT and they both said they accepted the latters credits, and vice versa. Also, I'll be going to be taking my SAT for the first time this October. I have been studying extensively and it appears as if my score will be atleast a 2000 if not higher.

Now my question is, is this enough to get into UT Austin, UT Dallas, or any other kind of UT branch? My school is very small, and therefore does not do ranks or percentiles. There have been a few acceptances into UT Austin from my school, however they had been attending the private school since freshmen year and had near perfect GPA's.

Any information would be much appreciated.

Thank You.

Just try to get all As in those HCC classes and there’s a good chance you could get into UT Austin. I’d shoot for a high SAT score, though, let’s say 2200 and up. That’ll look impressive. As for other UT branches, they’re a lot different. They’ll probably be significantly easier to get into. They’re lacking in prestige, however.

Thanks for the reply, SmoothieMan.

That’s what a few counselors also told me, and I’m going to try my best to achieve all of those things, God willing.

I’m planning on going to Law School, and UT-Dallas and UT-Austin both have very good pre-Law bases. If I don’t get into UT-Austin right off the bat, I’ll probably end up getting CAPped and transfer to UT-Austin from UT-Dallas after one-two semesters.

Do you have any recommendations as to where I should volunteer? I don’t have all that many hours, and I’m not sure how many UT is looking for.

Thanks again.

What’s your class rank? UT could not care less what your GPA is, just what your rank is.

Hey TheLoneRanger, thanks for the reply.

As stated before, “My school is very small, and therefore does not do ranks or percentiles. There have been a few acceptances into UT Austin from my school, however they had been attending the private school since freshmen year and had near perfect GPA’s.”

Also, there are about two-three other students who are graduating with me — that is how small my class is.

Wow. I have no clue how they will handle that.

The usually estimate a rank for students who don’t provide one, but I can’t see them estimating your rank as 4/4. So I have no clue what they’ll do.

Yeah I know. I called them and they said it would be a really special case, but hopefully it’ll work out especially because of a good SAT score and all of the dual-credit classes I’m taking.

Yeah, that’s what I’d hope for. Hope that they can handle your special case. I would say private universities are normally better at handling special private school cases like yours. But that certainly shouldn’t stop you from trying. If you can get into UT, then obviously it’s a great deal, financially speaking.
As for volunteering, you just have to look into what volunteering activities are available in your area. I lived pretty far outside of Houston in high school, thus there’s a good chance it was nowhere near where you are now (Houston is huge). I did volunteer at the Houston Food Bank a few times, but that was through my father’s company.

A small private school that only offers Arabic? Is it like a madrassah of some sort?
