I was kicked out of the biology program at University of California, Irvine but I feel that the process was unfair . I came into the university as an undeclared student. I was thinking of taking biology classes the next quarter. However, the undeclared office called all the undeclared students for a meeting. They asked to see what major we were interested in pursuing. They said that they just wanted to know and writing the major on the paper( the paper was not a contract, just a small index card that had my name and majors to select ) did not mean that we will have to change into that major. I wrote down Biology because at that point I was hoping to take my first bio class in the fall. A few days later, I see that my undeclared status has changed to Biological Sciences and I received an email telling me to come into the office and sign a contract in order to be admitted into the biological sciences program. I was shocked because I was told by the undeclared office that they just wanted to know what I was interested in pursuing and I would not have to declare that major. I was given a contract that stated I had to complete the first two bio courses and the general chem series within two quarters and I could not withdraw from the university at all. At the time, I did not know that change of majors can complete the bio classes and chem classes without signing a contract. I signed the contract because they told me this was the only way to stay in the major.Unfortunately, I needed to withdraw because my insomnia was getting out of hand but I could not withdraw because I had signed the contract. I failed the intro bio class and I was kicked out of the major.

I believe that the contract was unfair because students who want to change their major are able to just take the intro bio/chem courses and apply at their own pace without a contract. I did not know this at the time. I could have taken a break for my health and come back to take those classes. Students are given a contract after they get into the program.I am seriously depressed over this because I really wanted to be a bio major :/ . Based on all of this information , do you believe that giving me a contract in the first place was unfair ?
