Help! I'm from England and spending a year abroad studying at UOF!

So I'm spending next year studying Marketing at UOF. I'm currently looking at dorms and it's scaring me a little, I currently have my own room and bathroom and only share a kitchen with 4 others. Ideally I'd really like this set up again, however I know that's not possible. On the UOF website, it says that some rooms are single but I don't know if this actually means single or if it still means shared. A single room is really important for me, so could anyone let me know if single really means single?

I'd really like to be near classes and I'm interested in joining a sorority. I'm also fairly sociable so I'd like a fairly sociable dorm, although I like to be alone at night and not have to deal with snoring and sharing, etc. Obviously I won't have a car so is getting around easy? How far away are grocery stores and shopping malls?

Also on the UOF dorm price rates, are these the final prices or the prices before tax? In the UK, tax is always included in the price, if something is a £1, you pay £1, that's why I'm unclear.

Any other advice is welcome as well!

Welcome to UF!!

You don’t pay taxes on rent (dorms).

The UF housing website should have the floor plans available to review:

http://www.housing.ufl.edu/undergrad/choices/

Not many options for “singles”. You may want to take a look at lakeside, it’s “apartment” style, with 4 “single” rooms that share 2 bath rooms and one kitchen/living room. However, it is fairly far from campus (as dorms go). If you go “single” or even apartment style (like beaty tower), they do tend to be the least sociable dorms. At least at Beaty or Lakeside, you will have 3 other roommates, so that helps. :)

Side note, Beaty is near the sororities, so it’s much more convenient for rushing. However, you will need to share a room. :)

Good Luck!
