Housing Rental Rates have been updated for 2014-2015 (and yes, they are higher)

<a href="http://www.housing.ufl.edu/undergrad/payments/rates/">http://www.housing.ufl.edu/undergrad/payments/rates/</a></p>

On average, a double in Broward, Graham, Jennings, etc, is $72 more a semester; a double in Beaty is $80 more a semester, and a double in Hume is $101 more a semester.

Holy cow. I have FL prepaid for 4 years of tuition and 2 years of dorms, so I’m safe for now, but the last 2 years will probably be really expensive. Ouch. Why is college so expensive?!

lol, you plan to live on campus for all 4 years?

@arrozconleche for your last two years, you’ll find apartments (with roommates) a lot more cost effective.

Really? What are the typical prices? Also, how many roommates would you say make it cost effective? I know that more people allow the cost to go down, but I wouldn’t want to room with like 100 other people (an exaggeration, I know).

You can google apartment and prices, but, in general, housing in Gainesville isn’t very expensive.

Thanks for the info! It’s a relief to know it isn’t as pricey as I thought.

Splitting the rent on a house with roommates is by far the lowest cost housing I’ve seen in Gainesville. Apartments come relatively close in terms of price, but you’ll need at least 3 other roommates to make it cheap. If you hunt for a good deal on renting a house you can easily find one that is sub $400/mo per person rent (with 2 other roommates) and is within walking distance to campus. Add utilities and it will go up closer to 450-500/mo per person, which is about where the cheap 4 bedroom apartments are (before utilities).

So yeah, use those two years in the dorms to make some good friends who will want to split a house for junior/senior year, and be sure to check craigslist/classifieds for a house at least 6 months before the start of the semester.

Edit: Just wanted to mention I’ve heard people talk about how they’ve gotten rent in a house as low as $250/mo per person

Wow. $250/mo per person?! That is mind blowingly cheap. Even $400-500 is still cheap. I think that’s what I’ll end up doing.
