Help International student

Hi everyone! I'm interested in studying in the UK. My question is requirments to UK universities are same with requirments to US universities? SAT, GPA, essays, recommends that's all?

Thank you!

NO!

The UK educational system is COMPLETELY DIFFERENT from the USA educational system. The requirements to be admitted to UK colleges and universities are completely different from admissions to USA colleges and universtities.

What country are you completing your secondary school/high school in? Please give us enough information so that we can give you helpful advice, don’t keep things a “secret” from us.

KEVP

Ok Kevp! I’m from Kazakhstan. And now I’m junior.
My stats:
SAT: 2250
SAT subject: Math II:800; Physics: 800
UW GPA: 4.0

Our school doesn’t offer AP classes unfourtunately…
I think about applying to UK universities. Is A-level neceserry? What are requirments to UK universities?

Are you going to an American school in your home country? Otherwise, UK unis might not need the above. I advise you to contact the unis you are thinking of applying to because they probably don’t get many applicants from Kazakhstan. But they might accept your Kazakhstan high school qualifications (whatever they may be. I’m afraid I don’t know).

There is a forum in the UK which is just like College Confidential (but for the UK obviously).
It’s called The Student Room. Just google it, you might find it useful.

thank you onemoreparent, I’m sure I’ll find it useful…

UK universities will want to see, as part of your UCAS application,

 • standardised test scores
 • a 4000 character personal statement which focuses on why you want to study that subject, not extra curriculars
 • a reference from a teacher

Given your lack of APs, then in the absence of other Kazakh qualifications then some universities will want you to take a foundation course first.

What subject are you planning on applying for?

I think finance or management…

UK students applying to UK colleges and universities MUST take A-levels.

The UK colleges and universities will want international students to take something equivalent to A-levels. For USA students, that means AP tests. I don’t know what is the Kazakh equivalent of A-levels and AP tests. But whatever it is, you need it.

KEVP

SAT subject tests are also considered eqivalent to AP tests or A levels. So you can use those SAT subject tests. And the two scores you have (Math, Physics) are perfect. But I am almost certain you will need at least THREE SAT subject tests. So you should be thinking about taking another one. You don’t need another perfect “800” score on this third one, but obviously the higher your score the better your chances. Also your SAT score of 2250 is very good as well.

So besides these tests, you should also be focusing on your personal statement and preparing for interviews.

KEVP

Thank you KEVP. When is deadline to apply?
How many essays should I write?

Askar96, you should check each university’s international qualifications page. For instance, you cannot apply to the University of Cambridge with your qualifications (SATs and/or the Kazachstan national high school diploma isn’t enough). However, you can apply to the University of Oxford with the SAT I and three SAT II.

In order to apply to Oxford or Cambridge or a medicine course, you need to apply before October 15. Otherwise, you should apply by January 15.

You don’t need to write a American College-style essay. You should a focus on writing a four thousand character PERSONAL statement, that focuses on your academic merit and some RELEVANT work experience you may have.

But always remember that there are many, many more colleges and unis in Britain besides Oxford and Cambridge. Oxford and Cambridge are the most prestigious, and the hardest to get into. But look at other UK colleges and unis as well, that are easier to get into. But, yes, I do think you have a shot at Oxford if you can get at least one more SAT II test with a score above 700. But there are colleges and unis in the UK that would admit you even with a lower score.

So plan to take at least one more SAT II test. But even BEFORE you have taken it, start the process of applying for these universities. Find out from each their deadline, essay requirements, etc. This information is much easier in today’s days of the internet.

KEVP

Surprisingly, the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge are not the hardest to get into. Some of be hardest universities to get places in are LSE, UCL and ICL.

Oxford and Cambridge get around five applicants per place, the other schools (that I listed) get around 15 applicants per place. Some courses, such as Economics with History B.Sc., at LSE had 60 applicants per place.

MeIsHM - That doesn’t actually mean that LSE, UCL or ICL are more selective than Oxbridge. There is far more self selection taking place for applicants to Oxbridge. The average entry tariff at Oxbridge remains higher than LSE, UCL or ICL.

i’m also looking at UCL medical school i really want to get into it how do i ? how do i get excepted ?

You need to apply via UCAS between 1st September and 15th October. I would suggest doing some research both on university websites and on The Student Room.

All these people telling you to apply by the 15th of October are wrong, unless you plan on applying to Cambridge or Oxford or to study medicine. The UCAS deadline is January 15.
