So I really want to do engineering for RD (college of engineering), so I wrote a REALLY good essay for that. I also want to Information Science (alternate choice college) from the College of Arts, and I wrote an essay on that as well.

The problem is that my College of Arts essay is far inferior to my College of Engineering Essay. Does this matter? Does Cornell do admissions based on each college, or do they both affect each other?

Please help, I have couple of days left before submitting. : /

Cornell places a lot of weight on the essays from what I heard, which makes sense because they get over 30,000 applicants with top grades, test scores, etc. I suggest refining your CAS and make it as good as you can.

I think admissions is based on each college. Like engineering would probably place more emphasis on test scores than CAS would.

But keep in mind that it is very unlikely for your application to get deferred to second choice. That doesn’t happen very often. However, I’m not sure if the people reading the application see both essays or if they only see the essay for the college they work for, so in case they do, you might want to make sure that the CAS essay is pretty good, but don’t worry too much if you like the engineering one better.
I liked my essay for my alternate choice a lot more than the one for my primary choice, but I still got in to my primary choice. Your Common App essay is also extremely important (I think mine was a big reason why I got in.)

Admissions for each school would have access to entire file & could see both essays. Someone asked that somewhere on the admissions blog on the Cornell site. . .

If you are applying primary to COE, it would be possible either to:
be accepted (or waitlisted?) to Engineering & that’s it (CAS would never see your application), or
not admitted COE and the application might or might not be passed along to alternate CAS admissions (I think depending on whether COE admissions thinks it would be a good fit/possible admit for CAS or not).
IF application is sent to CAS applicant could be admitted, waitlisted, or denied there. In any case, only one decision would be sent back to the applicant.

Reverse would be true if applying to CAS primary & COE as alternate.

My son’s engineering essay was fantastic but his CALS essay (his second choice school) was mediocre. He was accepted into the COE ED. So I don’t think they placed much emphasis on his second choice school’s essay.

I have no idea where this statistic comes from, but people on these forums have said several times only 2% of people who aren’t admitted to their first choice school end up being accepted to their second choice.
