Help Me Choose UCSC College! Please!!!

I asked my tourguide about c19, and she said you have about 85% of getting into them; same as the others. I added that since it's so popular, wouldn't it be more difficult? But she said clearly, "No!" :/ Let's believe her, for now.

i've been stressing over this all night/day... i'm majoring in science and situation.. i dont want to be around the nerds... so does it matter which college you pick? this is just where you live or is this also where you will be studying?? thats the part i am confused about!! help... deadline approachin =/ eeek

Your college does not affect your major. It might get inconvenient if the college is far away from the place where you have to take your classes (such as the science building), but thats about it. I doubt it affects where you study; Can't everyone go to the library?

berceuse: When you enroll in a college, you have to take a specific class. Everyone IN that college have to take it. So basically, you are around people who have the same interests as you. (at least I think it's design like that)

Don't worry TOO much. Just pick a college you think you want to be in. Majors don't really matter.

Actually, you only have to take the core classes from the college; these are typically 1 quarter. After that, it doesn't affect what classes you can (and cannot) take.

thanks everyone, that helps a whole lot =) i just submitted my SIR. does cost vary from college to college since some rooms are bigger and such..?

Wait till your housing packet comes.

berceuse ,

The only way you can go wrong in selecting a college is if you have short legs and end up in Crown's lower quad. As one of the existing students here put it, you'll get "buns of steel" just going uphill to the dining hall.

As a practical matter, the selection of college only makes a difference for social matters, how nice a view you have around your dorm, and what course they bore you with in your first quarter. There are marginal differences in access from bus stops, which matters only if you are carrying bags of groceries to on-campus apartments if you live on campus after your freshman year. Cowell is clearly the best for that last issue.

Because Cowell's old, are all of it's dorms and bathrooms gross and small or something?

Go Porter!

could anyone help me choose a college? iono much about em but im not a hippie type at all. I'm really into sports and working out, and im a pretty big partier. Even though im not a hippie im not against drugs at all, and would like to be in a place where people arent too serious at studying, or too many tree huggers.

I was thinking about Porter, and got all the up to paying in my SIR when I started second guessing myself. I'm a pretty relaxed guy and I'm all for meeting people, listening to music, talking, drinking to coffee. But when it comes to massive parties, and drugs, it really isn't my scene. Is this just some over exaggeration that Porter has a lot of drugs in it? I think every college has a pretty good population of students that are constantly baked, is Porter that bad? If it really is....then I guess I'll go with 8, or Crown. Maybe Stevenson? AGH, frustration. haha

Any suggestions?

There is quite a difference between Porter and Crown. Porter definitely has the reputation of being the drug scene so if your not into that, probably not the best place for you. There are many other colleges to choose from. Stevenson would at least be a step down from Porter as far as the party scene goes. You can always choose a substance free floor within these colleges to ensure that people around you have similar ideologies about drugs that you do.

When you go on your college visits, the UCSC tour will allow you to go in some of the dorm rooms. It sounds like you want the social atmosphere without the drugs. Whereever you end up, I have heard people are very respectful to those not using drugs and they will not pressure you into it. But if you want to get away from it completely, the substance free floors would be the best bet.

whats c19?

Also I'm a transfer student going to UCSC and I will be living off campus so I'm not too worried about the rooms. I am wondering what college would be the best bet for me. I'm a psychology major and I'm social, not into drugs and don't want to be smelling drugs everywhere, I can't stand selfish, self-absorbed preps, I don't mind preps as long as they are pretty decent people, same goes for rappers I just people who are real and who doesn't want to create drama. I'm not much of a party person but i can get into it and i like being social.

I love video games, so really into it, I want to have a good study atmosphere, and I want a college that will really advance me like community service, scholarships, writing help, projects, research all that good stuff. I don't mind really geeky and nerdy people as long as they have a personality and a life.

So what college would be good for me, I hope to maybe meet you all during the coming fall. Thanks.

similar to you liveangel.. was looking at cowell, but people say they party there a lot...

crown is where all the asians are, but i was looking at the college demographics and there are 25% asians, 50% white.. so.. for me, that's not too bad. 1 asian for every 2 whites... my school was 40% asian haha..

crown also likes to game

crown definitely sounds like the best bet for you guys.

I am looking at Crown. You look to be very similar to me Liveangel, and I guess badhairdude as well. I like computer games so I would probably enjoy at WOW environment :) but I do not really want to be with people who have no life but studying. I guess I'd rather be around ultra study minded people than drug/party people.

wow. people really against tree huggers eh? i guess you guys wont be joining the first rain run through the forest...
anyway, why do people keep harping on the racial demographics? what does that show at all? shouldnt you be choosing based on the core course and the college motto?

Rain run through the forest sounds pretty nice, I wouldn't mind doing that ^_^.

hay guys, let's play WoW
