I’m interested in majoring in English and/or criminal justice/law (similar, I know, lol) and the colleges I’m interested in are:

New College of Florida

University of FL

FL State

UCF

Those aren’t ranked in any particular order of preference. I know that NCF is tiny, liberal arts, nontraditional etc and the other 3 are huge universities - aside from that, what are the main differences? (Ex: FSU vs UF)
Which has the best programs for BOTH of the areas I’m interested in, and which has the most fun atmosphere?

Of course, I’m doing my own vigorous research. But getting others’ input helps, too, esp. if I can find anyone going to one of those 4 schools.

Well no doubt NCF is going to be the least fun. UF, FSU and UCF are all going to be a ton of fun. Depends on what you like to do. I'm a Gators fan, so I'd no doubt pick UF. UCF is in a 'real' city, FSU is in a 'city', although smaller one, as is UF. I dont think Tallahassee is supposed to be anything special, same with GVille, and Orlando isn't either. I've heard people refer to GVille and Tallahassee as 'hicky'.

I dont know anyone at FSU, although everyone who went to UF loves it, and my friend at UCF loves it.

UF really isn't weak in any areas, academically.

That's just a start. I'm sure someone can answer specifics about their locations and stuff to do.

I lived in Gainesville for a year, loved it. Moving back to go to UF in a few semesters. No idea about NCF, and haven't been to Tally. But I'll say this. Go to Orlando if you only wish to party and be around the annoying people you wish you never saw again from high school. Because they are ALL there(Unless you are OOS of course).

Florida State has the best English Department and the oldest Criminology program. Tallahassee is substantially larger than Gainesville and more diverse, with state government, FAMU and the coastal areas not too far away. Tallahassee is a beautiful, hilly (for Florida anyway) city, with many tree-covered roadways. Florida State is also a gorgeous university, like no other in Florida. The closest in appearance would be UF.

The FSU campus is quite compact and heavily traveled. FSU is more densely built than any other state university as it is in the same place it started in the 1850s.

Tallahassee also has a bit more of a continental climate, with more real seasons, than the rest of Florida. Winter can be quite chilly but spring is simply breathtaking.

UF is closer to Tampa and Jacksonville.

UCF is quite flat in terrain and on the outskirts of Orlando.

I have only been to U of F & FSU. Both are nice campuses. Male/female imbalance at FSU which has more females than males. Rumors about New College is that it is very liberal & heavily into pot.

For what you plan on studying, I would say FSU hands down. I also like UCF a lot. All those schools are good choices though, so you really can't go wrong with the one you end up picking.

haha lol girls rock don't we?
I visited NCF the other day with my mom. It's a very cozy, friendly atmosphere. Which I love. You can just walk up to people in the cafe/library and chat them up, and everyone is open and friendly. None of the obnoxious cliquey "ew why is she talking to me" attitudes of high school. The only thing about NCF that worries me is that it doesn't really have specific programs for my field of interest. But, you can create your own classes so if they don't have what I need, I can study it independently and have it count as a class. Which rocks. Now I have to see FSU and UF and then decide. Next week I get my FSU decision!!!

I know a friend of a friend who left NCF because of the heavy drug usage (one of the reasons, not the main one) and is now attending a local CC till a transfer goes through.

As one poster said, at UCF you will see all the people you knew from high school (at least that is how it is with my school). It is a nice campus though and is in Orlando, which i a sort of big city, but there's nothing special about it. It seems quieter and more friendly compared to Miami. All I know about UF is that it's the Ivy League of Florida and considered the best school you can get into. The person who does my hair goes to FSU, and I don't see her much but she did tell it that it is sort of rural. She also told me that one thing she likes is that the students get a lot of discounts on items and also free public transportation. One thing she said she hated was that it was rural so there was only one mall that everyone went to so it is very common to see people wearing the same clothes as you (though if you know how to dress well, you should be able to create your own style).

Well, she is from Miami so maybe that is why considers Tallahassee rural. I have never been there myself and she is the only person I know who goes to FSU.

Not sure on the other reasons, I only met him once. I just remember the NCF drug jokes he was making in explaining why he was attending CC. Sorry!

And to correct the other poster... there are two malls nearby, the Tallahassee mall and the Governor's Square mall (full two-story). Along with many many small and unique shopping stores.

OK, Thanks!!
I don't think drug use would be a huge thing for me - I don't do drugs but at the same time, I'm not prudish about what other people do.
SB: If you contact your friend a lot, can you ask for other reasons? Only if you keep in touch. I don't want to put anyone to trouble. And btw, does SB in your un stand for Satellite beach? (Cause I see u live in FL)
