Help me I don't know what to major in!

Hello. I am having trouble deciding what I want to major in. I have received straight A’s in all of my classes. The only class I found significantly more interesting than all the others is psychology. I also heard that psychology is one of the worst majors unless I become a psychologist. I hope to make lots of money when I am older. I would definitely prefer a major that will open up opportunities where I can earn a lot of money and be successful. I have heard that engineering is a good major to make money. I just want some ideas of what would be a good major for college. Any ideas help. Thank you.

If you are interested in math and technology engineering is a great field right now. The pay is great and you don’t have to be in school for years and years. However is psychology is something you are passionate about then you should look into it. If you want to get more money in the psychology field usually medical school is required. I don’t how old you are but I would recommend taking classes that involve technology, math or robotics to see if engineering is something you’ll be interested in. I hope this helps!!

Common misunderstanding, but not true. I was a psychology major in undergrad, and I currently work in technology. I have a PhD in psychology but most of my colleagues within my field do not - they have master’s or bachelor’s degrees and some work experience. I work in user experience, but there are jobs for psychology majors across many fields - management, organizational behavior/industrial-organizational psychology, marketing, market research, analyst roles, human resources, program management, data science, etc. What really matters is doing internships and learning skills in college that will make you a more marketable applicant. Combining psychology with other majors or minors - like math, computer science, physics, statistics, etc. - can help you learn the skills that position yourself well.

I don’t know how much is “lots” of money. I make a respectable low six-figure income, which is slightly above-average for my field. Fields in which you could make lots of money are consulting (psychology is actually pretty good prep for a consulting career) and marketing (particularly if you ascend the ranks and become a marketing manager). HR and management can also be lucrative careers in the upper-ranks. You’re unlikely to make lots of money right out of college; more money usually comes by mid-career and/or after a graduate degree.

Medical school certainly isn’t required.

I also wouldn’t pursue an engineering degree just by default. There are lots and lots of other jobs that have high earnings, and to be really frank, engineering salaries start high but plateau after a while (particularly if you don’t move into management positions).
