HELP ME!!!: Johns Hopkins vs. MIT vs. WUSTL vs. Columbia for pre-med

Hello, So I have been accepted to these schools but I'm having a tough time deciding (fyi i'm pre-med :] )

*I've been to Hopkins and I feel as though the environment is a bit drab, but its very good for pre-meds. WashU is good too
*I really like the MIT culture but I hear it has a lower acceptance rate to medical schools/ is more engineering oriented
*I like that Columbia is in New York and if I decide I don't want to be pre-med then I can have good alternative majors

i’d go to columbia because of the volunteering/shadowing opportunities in nyc. there are a ton of hospitals and med schools there.

imo columbia you’ll have a overall better college experience

I got accepted to all those places too. I ruled out JHU BME also because it seemed drab when I visited. WashU is a very good premed school, but I just don’t like the location. I LOVE mit quirkiness and emphasis on science, but I’m also worried about GPA. I’ve heard that the non-engineering classes are quite manageable and cross-registering at Harvard is an option. I ruled out Columbia because I didn’t like such a strict core, but the location is great.

Aznjunior, I agree with you completely. As the days go by, I see myself leaning more and more towards MIT. My biggest problem with MIT is the grade deflation and how that would affect me when I apply to medical schools in the future. I hear that approximately 74-75% of MIT students who apply actually get into medical school( much lower compared to the ivies and JHU).Also, I was wondering if attending JHU for undergrad would help me get into their medical school.

My D is trying to decide between JHU, WUSTL, Northwestern and Cornell for pre-med. We visited WUSTL yesterday. Strongest impression for me was how uniformly satisfied, happy the students were with their experience, from freshmen through graduating seniors. Everybody genuinely seemed to love the school. You dont find that everywhere. St Louis sure isn’t Boston (or NYC or Chicago) but the area surroundng the school was beautiful on a sunny spring day.

To me, JHU for pre med seems similar to MIT for engineering - extremely intense science orientation. If really you’re up for that, than that’s an amazing opportunity. Depends on what u want/ are ready for from a college experience. All of these schools are excellent; all will give you a high liklihood of getting into med school if you do well. Really, IMHO, success wil depend on your love/passion for your pursuit. Let us know hat you decide, please.

So I finally decided to attend MIT. I fell in love with Boston and the campus when I visited there and attending the pre-health panel discussion helped me to clarify several issues. Apparently, last year, 94% of seniors were accepted to a medical school. The percentage fell to about 83% when you accounted for alumni/ graduates that were also applying. I feel that this is a terrific match for me :)

being in JHU undergrad is actually a slight factor against being accepted into their med school

I’ll let everyone else argue out the other schools, and will just provide my own tip about MIT. If you’re sure about medicine, don’t go to MIT. Maybe it’s too late for you to change your mind, but MIT is not the best choice out of them all. The #'s you’re reporting are most likely screened. You won’t get much recognition in applying just from the MIT tag you carry with you, trust me.
