I am down to my final three schools, Penn State UP, Florida State, and University of Maryland CP. I intend to major in Finance. The costs of the schools are basically irrelevant because I am out of state and they are all within a few thousand of each other. But they each have a few downsides, so please help me!!

Penn State UP: I got accepted into Smeal but for the Summer. I also live in RI so 7 hours by car is really the only way to get there.

Florida State: Accepted into business school for fall semester. Not as highly ranked. Only way to get there is by plane.

UMaryland CP: NOT accepted to Smith Business school. Can get there by short flight or 6hr drive. (any input on how hard it is for Internal transfer is appreciated too)

UMCP is the best choice for finance, im from FL and trust me FSU is **** in terms of biz compared to UMCP, penn state isnt really well known for biz soo def go with UMCP, i mean the worst that could happen is that you dont get into UMCP biz and u have to transfer to somewhere else after 2 years for the final two years of biz school. I may be faced with the same choice

i agree that PSU and UMD are better for business. if you take location into account, i'd say that UMD is the much better choice overall. from what i've heard from friends, it isn't too hard to transfer into the business school as long as you do well in the intro classes.

My son is in the similar situation too. He has to choose one of these schools:

Penn State U: Accepted into Smeal business school for Fall 2007

U of Florida: Accepted for Fall 2007

UMCP: Not directly admitted to business school, but invited to the Markets and Society Program for Fall 2007 (in-state)

For UMCP, he is an in-state student and obviously tuition is much cheaper. Only concern is how difficult to transfer to the business school in his junior year and what other majors are available in case he is not transferred to the business school. Any suggestions/comments from those who are currently in the Market and Society will be greatly appreciated.

penn state seems to accept more students into their business school, while umd is a little selective. while this might not seem so great to you right now, it just means umd's business school could be better. i personally don't know because it's not like i've been at both schools.

as for transferring in, you pretty much need to be invovled and have a decent gpa. like i said in a previous post, i believe the average gpa of those who were accepted into the business school as transfers was a 3.7. it may seem really high, but if you work at it, it's not hard and not nearly as impossible as it may look. also, getting invovled on campus is fun =) i say umd all the wayyy

def UMCP because it is by far the best biz school from three u have, and as long as u do well u should prob get into the biz school after 2 years, i am prob going to be in the same boat

So, Mfavic.....I'm too lazy to check. Did you ask the same question on the other 2 forums? Did you get unanimous votes on the PSU site for Penn State, and FSU=Florida State??!!!! Maybe not an unbiased vote here! :)

The Terps on this board were definitely the most biased, but with valid reasons and show a strong sense of school spirit which I like. I forgot to mention that i got into that Market and Society thing at UMCP. I am visiting Penn State tomorrow and will probably have my mind made up between PSU and UMCP, but I am leaning towards UMCP

I really liked Penn State. Their new Business building is really impressive. I have not seen UMCP since November so my trip in two weeks should help my thought process. It basically though comes down to what is a bigger factor, starting on July 1 or not in my major? I really don't think I can make a bad decision between UMCP and PSU-UP but needless to say it is still a very tough choice.

I have been hearing that a 3.5gpa will get you a chance at a transfer into Smith and a 3.7 is more likely what you need to get in. Is there any truth to that?

hey mfavic, a 3.5 should be more than just a chance at a transfer into Smith..if you have a 3.5, and you're active and invovled, there's a good chance. the 3.7 gpa is thrown into the picture because that was the average GPA of last years transfer students, soo if you want to be safe about it, i'd say aim high (and still be active in the university)...which isn't exactly a bad thing :]
