I’ve made a post before this to choose between W&M and Binghamton but I still can’t find choose not sure why. I think one of the main reasons is because I don’t know what to expect when I go to college. I know that it will be much tougher when I go to college so I’m not sure what to do. I find satisfaction in earning good grades but I’m not sure how different W&M and Bing will be in terms of academics. They’re both good schools so it will be hard no matter where I go but I wonder if it will be easier in one place over the other.
In terms of cost, it won’t matter much. My goal is to go to med school and as long as med school costs around 70-80k a year, both schools are within budget according to my parents.
In Binghamton, I was accepted to the scholars program and their FRI program which basically gives me an edge with priority class registration and also gives me funds for research, I believe.
What someone said on the other post I made was that I should go to whichever school I like better but honestly, I don’t like one over the other. I visited both places and I could see myself in both places.
I guess my main concern is the difference in academics in the schools and for some reason I keep thinking about prestige although it doesn’t really matter for med school.
So basically, what would you do in this position and any comments on why would be nice.
These are both great schools and you’ll find challenging academics at either. The key differences that jump out at me:
- W&M is half the size, and the surrounding town is much smaller
- At W&M, 75% of students live on campus; 50% at Binghamton
- Binghamton student to teacher ratio is 20:1; W&M is 12:1
- Winters are much colder in NY
Good luck with your decision!
Are you a NY resident? Is the cost of the schools the same? If med school is goal you will want to keep UG costs down. If you are coming in to Bing with lots of APs you could potentially graduate early. Scholars program at Bing is great. Look up med school admit rates for both and compare. Both are excellent options.
I’m an international so neither are exactly cheap but within budget. I also spent the last couple of years in NY so I’m used to the weather. I guess the decision will come down to whatever I’m feeling on may 1st.
