I am a mom of a fall freshman and already planning a vacation for January. I want to know when the students need to be back at Cornell after winter break. The schedule I have says classes start on January 23. But it also says registration begins January 16. Does this mean the students need to be at Cornell on the 16th? If not when do they usually go back. Are there any current students out there that can help?

Registration can be done online. So I'm pretty sure you don't need to be on campus to register.

Wait for more replies, because I'm an incoming transfer student. But I'm quite sure of the fact that registration is done online.

Hi! Cornell mom here. D just completed 1st year. I do not think they have to be there for registration as it is done on-line--But if memory serves me correctly- kids who are interested in sorority/fraternity life use that week to pledge (?) or something along the lines of pledging. My d didn't go that route so I don't know specifics but her roommate did join a sorority. So I am almost positive that a lot of kids go back a week early if they are interested in joining a sorority/fraternity. With that said, I would hesitate making vacation plans for that week without getting more info from some of the students.

thanks all for the info..
Some of the hotel rates go down starting the week of Jan. 16, so I thought I'd start planning for that week. Guess I'll do more research.
If anyone else has any info on when the students head back to Cornell after the winter break I'd appreciate it!

this past year, a lot of people got stuck because most of the airports around here were closed or severely delayed due to weather. therefore, a lot of students couldn't get back until after classes started, some even as late as wednesday. however, with that said, a lot of professors are very sympathetic towards situations in which the students cannot deal with and allow for the missed classes, so if your d is not interested in joining a sorority, you can book her flight back on sunday, but the safest bet would be friday or saturday. but, if she is planning on doing rush week, she should be back a week before classes start.

Rush for Fraternities and Sororites as well as Residential Advisor Selection are held the week before classes start. Most students come back a week early for these activities. Even if they are not rushing, many students prefer to come back early, especially freshman. I would recommend not planning a vacation during this time period for the time being.
