Help: My interviewer has been asking me unusual requests.

Hey guys,

Briefly, I'm an international student from Europe, and was accepted to Columbia College. My Columbia interviewer was very rude when we did the interview. Arriving two hours past the scheduled time, speaking to me like I'm stupid..etc. Anyhow, I shrugged it off, and didn't let it affect my view of Columbia, or how I acted in front of him. Figured it's just his personality.

Well, now, I got into other schools higher on my list, and will not be going to Columbia. However, my interviewer is still contacting me telling me I need to do some internship with him, and arrange meetings to some science fairs in my country, and now he has asked to go to his office next week without stating why I need to do that. I have work, and other things to do (things that I believe got me into Columbia.) So I'm not sure how I'm supposed to respond. I can't just ignore him, that would be rude of me, but I can't just skip work for no apparent reason. And I'm a little paranoid that he might sabotage my acceptances to the other schools. (I know it sounds silly.. but I can't help but feel that way)

What am I supposed to do now? Any help would be really appreciate! I thought about contacting Columbia directly, but that might be worse..

Well if you’re not planning on attending Columbia and have already accepted another school’s offer, I would just try to politely inform the interviewer of your college choice. But I would certainly let the college know that you felt that his behavior has been inappropriate. You owe nothing to the interviewer.

Bu the way, Columbia College is in Chicago- the logo at the top of this thread is for Coumbia University in NYC.

Hey PsychoDad10,

Thanks for the suggestions! Just to clear the confusion, I am talking about Columbia College of Columbia University in NYC. Not the one in Chicago.

Hey John12w, I would also encourage you to contact the admissions office if this guy really is heckling you. If one of their interviewers is out of line (and it sounds as if this guy has reached that point), Columbia would certainly like to know.

Columbia College is an undergraduate college of Columbia University.

I echo figment42s comment. Any school would want to know if there is alum who is acting inappropriately. Just like I complain about service in a restaurant after I’m done eating (for fear of someone spitting or worse in my food), I personally would make sure I have my plans set before complaining, but I would still let the school know.

I’m a Columbia alumni interviewer. The behavior you describe of your interviewer is wholly inappropriate and I encourage you to report it to the school. All you need do is send an email to the admissions office. (Feel free to incorporate my message here in it.) I bet somebody there has already read your post, so all they need is your name to ID the creep. His “boss,” the regional Alumni Recruiting Committee coordinator, will get a message saying never to use this guy again. You won’t suffer any blowback: The creep won’t know who turned him in, or probably even that he’s been permanently benched.

Your action along the lines I suggest will prevent other applicants from being subjected to similar unpleasantness, and it will excise a bad apple from our otherwise dedicated and conscientious corps!
