HELP: Naviance & Common App are not syncing + recommendation problem

Hi guys,

So, a teacher that is writing one of my recommendations emailed me a few hours ago saying that she has finished my rec but she could not submit it. Turns out that careless me forgot to formally invite her (& the other teacher) to write me a rec over Naviance.

Now, I’ve taken the steps necessary to sync my Naviance account with my Common App account. I’ve waived my right to read the rec, signed FERPA, etc… On the instructions I received, it says that I should go to the “colleges I’m applying to” tab and if I scroll to the bottom of the page, I will find a place to add teachers. Instead, I see this:

Does anyone know how to add a teacher recommendation another way, or will I have to wait until they come out with their new system? I’m kind of panicked because I love this teacher to pieces and I am never careless like this… ugh! Any help would be appreciated.

Also, I’ve added colleges to my ‘apply list’ on the Common App but the “colleges I’m applying to” section is still empty… thoughts?

I contacted my GC about the issue. If I find out how to solve the issue myself, I’ll post the solution here so that others with the same problem can request teachers as well.

@gmanhax – Don’t feel bad. My Son is having similar problems. He requested a LOR in June thru Naviance, but that request was removed & replaced by the same "coming soon "message you stated above. He’s signed the FERPA on the C/A & it’s synced w/Naviance, but there isn’t a button on Naviance to add “schools I’m applying to”. Has your school year started? His hasn’t, so he will patiently wait until school starts next week & hope that all is resolved. Good luck!

@MomStudent2017 Thank you. My guidance counselor said that everyone’s LoR requests were wiped out anyway because they are implementing the new system, so I have nothing to worry about. Thanks for confirming that this is not only true of my school. Phew!

Does anyone know when this Naviance issue is going to be solved?

I was on earlier and I still see the same message about coming soon! We’ve not had any update from our HS either on when it would be resolved.

My GC said the new system was supposed to come out August 1st, but they changed it to September 1st. Seeing as today is September 2nd and it is not yet solved, I don’t know what the holdup is.

I’ve been asking too and the answer always seems to change-very frustrating!

I just noticed that the message in Naviance that said “Coming Soon! Updated Letters of Recommendation Experience” is gone for us and there is a link to a page that says it will show your letter of recommendation requests. The “Add Request” button on that page opens a page that lets you select a teacher and check boxes on your “schools I’m applying to list” plus a comment field to add a personal note to the teacher.

@Ynotgo I saw this as well, but it says that I will have to add colleges to my list before I can invite my teachers. Since my school year hasn’t started, I am unable to add schools to my “colleges I’m applying to” list. I guess I’ll have to wait until later this week, when I’m back in school!

Was just on the site and noticed that we now have the link as well. When you click on the link it will bring you to a new screen where you can add a request. The page also shows the schools on your list and if they require a letter or not so looks like you will select the school and then add the teacher or teachers you are requesting a letter of recommendation from. Haven’t done it yet but at least its finally up on the site.

You can invite teachers now. However, they can only upload recs for non-Common App schools. They cannot upload recs for CA schools until you have applied AND your hs has submitted its materials (school report, transcript, etc).

@itsgettingreal17 UGH! Seriously? What if you apply for a Common App school but use their own app on the website? ds is doing that tonight. Sometimes Naviance is great and sometimes it’s just a pain in the rear!

@Collegecue I’m not sure, but its possible. D applied to a mix of CA schools and non-CA schools. She submitted her transcript requests for all schools. Her hs sent the transcripts to non-CA schools right away. They still haven’t submitted to CA schools, even the ones that she has checked as “applied.” Yesterday her teacher tried to upload a LOR for all schools, and she was only allowed to upload for non-CA schools. She screenshotted the error message she received and it said that the hs needed to submit the school materials before she could upload the LOR. I also realized that “initial materials submitted” for non-CA schools refers to the school materials that still hasn’t been submitted for CA schools. We’re standing by to see whether her hs will get its materials submitted this week so her apps can be complete at a number of schools.

The button to add requests Is gone on my naviance therefore I’m unable to select the any teacher and none of my schools are popping up on the list
