[Help Needed] Can I change my major??

I was just accepted to the Penn State University park but i was accepted to the college of health and human development, is it possible to change my major to engineering? someone told me that it can be done when you get school, just simply tell your advisor that you wanna a major change… I’m not sure… any information helps! Thanks!

You can’t switch to Engineering. You will have to switch to DUS, which is fine. Your advisor will work with you and as a DUS major you can take the same classes as someone in Engineering. Be aware that nobody is actually in the school of engineering until their Jr year. Engineering majors must have a 3.0 and have passed certain classes with grades not lower than a c in order to continue.

@Twinmom2014‌ Thanks for replying! is 3.0 GPA hard to get?

^^^ Realize that you will have to take an assessment test to place into a math class that first semester engineering students take. ( Not sure the name of the class , Maybe Math 141) My daughter was a straight A student all through HS, all honors and Ap classes . The Math and Chem class was brutal. ( Keep in mind that her HS did not have AP Chem she had AP Physics, so she was at a disadvantage) I paid the extra money for her to go to Lion Tutors. Yes its hard. She told me nearly 1/3 of the kids in those classes withdrew by the end of the semester. My daughter was shell shocked her first semester. She said she would be a 4.0 student if she had any other major. Her current gpa is 3.2 and she is happy with that considering she is an engineering student

^^^agree! My son is an Eng. major. Calculus ll was brutal. He had to withdraw last semester. Repeating this semester. His roommate passed by 1 point. You must have a C. Or above. I think he needs a 3.3 GPA for a chem major. Use the tutors services, prof. Offices hours, and whatever you can to get through these “weeder” classes.

Now this semester Chem is just as brutal. He has physics and calculus, too. I think college shocked him as well.

He was a straight A student in HS. He took the AP classes and took the AP tests and scored either 4 or 5. BUT STILL!!!

Math 140 is calc 1 at PSU, and Chem 110 is Chem 1. They can be difficult but they will only weed you out if you don’t work hard. I got A’s in both last semester. So it is possible if, like the above parents said, you use your resources.

Good luck, DUS isn’t a setback.
