Changing Majors

Hey all,
While I visited UM a month or two ago, I was told in one of the info sessions that to change majors at UM, you have to reapply to the other school within UM and get accepted again.

I just wanted to ask anyone who went there and changed majors whether this is mostly just a formality, or if it's actually difficult... I'm currently thinking of being an Engineer but I'm increasingly unsure about it, and I want to have a fair amount of flexibility.

Thanks!

I'm assuming you will do LSA to Engineering...

You will need to have 2 semesters of Math (starting at Math 115), Physics 140, Chem 125/130, the freshman writing requirement, and Engin 101.

AP Credit will get you out of many of these classes, but if you don't have it, start getting these classes out of the way your first semester at school.

The second part is GPA...you need to have a GPA above a certain point to transfer to an engineering degree program. It's always above 2.5, possibly up to 3.0 for mechanical, chemical, electrical, etc.

But if you meet all of the requirements, it is just a formality :)

Look up "Engineering Transfer" on umich.edu and find the cross-campus section for better info.

Well, I'm applying to the college of engineering, but think I might end up transferring out if I don't like it... Is it hard to transfer in that situation? Do people ever get rejected?

First of all, you're technically changing colleges within the university, not changing majors.

But more to the point, if you start off in Engineering and decide you don't like it, you'll have no problem transferring in to LSA. Getting accepted for a transfer from CoE to LSA is more or less automatic.

Heh, my bad about the changing colleges within the university thing.

Thanks for the info, though. I liked Michigan a lot but was a little worried about that-
