Help! Northwestern University vs. University of Michigan in Ann Arbor

I'm looking to go into biochemistry / pre-medicine.

I've heard that University of Michigan has a better pre-med program and a better medical school than Northwestern.

However, many tell me that Northwestern is more prestigious and the smaller undergraduate school of a private university will prepare me better and also provide me with much more resource opportunities.

Right now, the tuition isn't an decisive issue, because I would be paying similar price for both schools since I don't live in Michigan.

However, will choosing Northwestern hinder my chances at entering a great med school considering UMich has a better medical school than Northwestern?

Thanks for your advice!

The difference between Michigan and Northwestern in prestige is not substantial. Northwestern has a higher USNWR ranking. Michigan has a larger alumni base and probably has more research facilities. Both have good graduate school programs. Neither one will hinder your chances to get into med school.

I would look at which school offers you a better fit. Ann Arbor is a college town and the university is the primary focus of the town. It has a larger student population. Northwestern is in a suburb of a large city and offers different opportunities in that regard but is on campus undergraduate student population is much smaller. Northwestern also does not have the campus Big Ten sports spirit that you will find at the other campuses.

I think cost is about the same. Michigan may be slightly less.
