Hi,
I'm a junior and I just took the May SAT. I got 2260 (CR 720 M 770 W 770). It's my first time.
However, my essay score was an 8. I only managed to salvage my writing score by getting the multiple choice all correct. Also, my CR was way lower than I got in mock tests.

I wanted to know whether I should take the SAT again in October. I understand colleges will see the essay score. I really want to get into Columbia...

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks guys!

I think you shouldn’t worry about it. Colleges know that the SAT essay is ■■■■■■■■. Just write good ones for the colleges themselves. In October you should be taking SAT IIs.

the fact that some places don’t take your writing score at all probably means that everywhere else takes it lightly. I remember the Columbia ad-con saying that they use the SAT essay to see if your application essays are really yours. By that i don’t think he means the score, but rather that they read the SAT essay.

There’s an artical saying that it’s all going to change. Research shows that the writing section predicts college success better than the critical reading. So college adcoms might treat it very highly starting with the next admissions year.

I remember this topic was posted on CC a while back. So don’t underestimate the SAT Writing.

wait … so if i scored poorly on the essay portion (6) what should I do? If my application essays are dramatically better is that going to hurt me …

Take it again only if you feel confident you can do better. Consider taking the ACT and if you do good on that (especially in writing), you’ll be set and just send in your current SAT and your ACT.

If I was you, I wouldn’t bother to retake the SAT as there’s always the chance that you’ll do worse. However if you’re confident you’ll do better, than take it again. Also, I remember hearing about how you guys get to selectively choose what SAT’s to send in and what not, so if Columbia won’t require you to send all your scores in, then probably definitely take it.

But seriously, in the grand scheme of whether you make it in or not, it won’t matter. No admission officer is going to look at your score and say, “oh, this person got an 8… deny!” You got a 770 in writing already and a score above 2200. Concerning the SAT I, you should be set. Sure, if you got a 12 and 2400, it would look better. But if you’re stressing out about this, don’t.

As for me personally, I’m pretty sure I won’t score higher on my SAT. I missed 0 on MC but got a 6 so it added up to a 720. What do you guys think I should do?

I got a 10 the first time I took it but I scored a 640.

I’m convinced they forgot to double my score :P

Thanks so much for the help, guys. I feel better about it now. I still want to retake it, but the problem with taking it again is that since I’m currently an American in China, I have to travel to Hong Kong to retake, and it’ll cost me at least $400 for all the travel + accomadation fees. :S
