What are your opinions on housing? Which one is the best etc..In my opinion, De Neve is the nicest looking and resembles a modern hotel.

I didn't get a chance to look at Hedrick or Rieber. How are those housing options?

I didn't like Dykstra that much, despite it being the most "social" hall out of the four halls. Dykstra looks really old and it seems a bit small and cramped. Others have said that the ceiling is pretty low and that's pretty much true.

I heard there are new res. halls...hedrick summit, rieber vista, and rieber terrace. How are those?

current bruins, please post your opinions here as well as those who have visited.

Any of the dorms are okay, but here's my personal opinion:

Hedrick (you might luck out and get freed from noise on some sides...oh and best dorm food!)
Sproul (good nexus for everything on the Hill!)
Dykstra (old, but FUN)
Rieber (noisy, construction, but great hall and my old haunt from work days)

I forbid all frosh to live in suites, Sunset, or DeNeve. You are banned. :-)

Should I make up a rumor that someone committed suicide on Bruin Walk? :P

Btw, if I go to UCLA, I'm considering Sunset, cuz I heard each room has its own bathroom (I NEED my own bathroom....i spend an average of 1.5 hours a day in my bathroom)

1.5 hours a day? What the hell do you do, have a seance with your dead relatives?

No, no, no. Sunset will not foster relationships and lasting friendships, darn it! I know, I lived there! Trust me, your habits will probably change, Speaker of the Dead. At any rate, at least consider what I'm saying, because I speak these words from experience: It is much harder to make friends in Sunset than it is in res halls.

For the record, the only really bad death was the guy who went on a rampage and killed ten people in an elevator at Powell Library at a late night study group. Many others were mentally scarred for life at the sight of the mutilated corpses, some beyond identification.

The suicides are never a good thing, and I've worked in the dorms for a little less than 3 years, so I've had my fair share of experience with them.

Unfortunately, not everyone is a happy person. Sometimes, happy people become unhappy. Dorms can magnify seemingly unimportant problems in some people, like a marriage can. When you live in the dorms, you are in a sense married to it.

Do not let this discourage you though, because just like a happy marriage makes an otherwise comfortable person live in bliss, a good dorm experience is the closest thing you can get to Nirvana short of illicit drug use.

I'm considering Sunset, cuz I heard each room has its own bathroom (I NEED my own bathroom....i spend an average of 1.5 hours a day in my bathroom)

First, its not true that every room in Sunset has it's own bathroom - in fact, most rooms have a bathroom shared between two rooms. And second, 1.5 hours?! You've gotta be kidding - believe me, I don't think your room(suite)mates will allow that ridiculousness.

go for the dorms the first year. They are much more sociable than the other choices. You instantly have 60+ people on the same hallway and you'll get to know them fast, have people to eat with in the commons, etc. 2nd year when you have a good group of friends is when you want the suites.

Ahhh I too am torn. The plazas are so much nicer than the res halls, but I guess it really is THAT hard to make friends? Ahhh, tell me it isn't that bad living in the plazas and making friends. The dorms are so subpar compared to the plazas.
