For CMC's supplement essay, the one on leadership, they say they want an analytical essay. Does that mean they want like an essay written like a research paper, or one where you relate it to yourself and how that person influenced you, etc? Please, I need help!

analytical generally means with a scholarly tone, analyzing the significance of who u have chosen.

it can be read in both ways. i was confused by it when i was applying, but i went the research paper route. they have your common app essay to learn about you, etc. they don't need another one. the analytical approach gives you the opportunity to show tha tyou can write well, think for yourself, prove your point, etc. i've talked to other cmc people about it though and some make it more personal. so either way is correct i suppose. still, i suggest the research paper.

I did the research paper style, though I was planning on including something about me in the end...but that just didn't work out.

Keeping it as an essay about someone else worked out fine, and I'm sure they knew what they were expecting when they asked for "analytical" essays in that prompt.
