I'm back to get more help from you guys. So after calling the financial aid offices for UCSD and UCI, they both told me to write an appeal, stating that I did file FAFSA before the deadline, but just that I filed it for 2007-2008 when I was supposed to file it for 2008-2009.

Has anyone been in the same situation as me before? If so, can you please help me out here? Any advice is good.

I think they've already told you what to write. Explain that you hit the wrong box, it's the first time you've filed the FAFSA (if it is), and did do so by the date. Perhaps you can do a screen print of the page that shows the date you filled out the wrong form and send that along.

Thank you seatofmypants, I will do that, thank you very much for your advice.

Here's what I got from one of UCSD's financial aid officers:
We have received your appeal for consideration for on time funding. Because your application was late, we will not offer UC funding at this time. However, we will review your appeal once awarding is complete for all students who were on time. Supervisors will review all the appeals of late applicants (probably in Sept.). We will notify you of our decision about your appeal at that time. For now, you will need to make your decision about coming to school and accepting your aid based on what is currently offered.

So what does this mean? Does this mean that, since I have NOTHING OFFERED TO ME, I'm screwed? I can't go to UCSD because I have nothing? no financial aid from FAFSA, no cal grant because you need a FAFSA to apply for one, and how do you check your student loans?

They cannot offer you any federal aid until you complete the correct FAFSA so you need to do that immediately. You should still be considered for the federal aid you are eligible for but some federal aid is limited in funding (the school is only given $xxx and one they have awarded $xxx they have no more so cannot offer it to you.)

For federal aid:
Pell grant - not limited funds - If your FAFSA EFC is low enough (under @ 4040) to qualify for Pell grant you should still get what you qualify for.
seog - limited funds - is for **very **low EFC (zero at many schools) and the schools decide how to disburse it. It is very limited funding.
ACG - Academic Competitiveness Grant - depends on Pell eligibility and some academic requirements. Not sure on the funding.
Perkins loan - Limited funding. Need based. Is limited funds - once they are awarded there is no more.
Stafford Loan -can be subsidized which are need based or unsubsidized/not need based. Not limited funds so you should be able to get those.
Work Study - I believe is limited funding - last year we did not think our daughter could earn the whole award and the financial aid officer said to let them know so they could offer the part she did not want to someone else.

I have read on other posting on CC that late FAFSA may make you ineligible for cal grants.

Get the correct FAFSA submitted now.

edit - googled 'calgrant deadline' - the deadline for the calgrant is march 2 - that is the State deadline so the school probably does not have any wiggle room there

Can FAFSA alone provide a full ride to a university if my family total income is below $20,000?

Not really. FAFSA does not actually provide you with anything. It uses your financial information to produce your EFC (Estimated Family Contribution) which the school uses find out your 'need' by taking your EFC away from their COA (Cost Of Attendance).

Federal aid is based on FAFSA (but awarded by the school). But federal funds are not generally enough to pay for a full ride at any school other than perhaps community colleges.

Maximum Pell Grant = $4731 (for zero EFC). Gets less as the EFC gets higher and phases out with an EFC of @4040ish.
Maximum SEOG grant = up to $4000 depending on the school and how much funding they are given (for instance my daughter's school the max is $2000). But SEOG is very limited and schools decide how to award it (for instance another poster said she has a zero eFC and does not get the SEOG)..
ACG= $750 (requires Pell eligibility and other academic requirements).
Perkins Loan = maximum $4000 - limited funds again.
Stafford Loan = maximum for a freshman $3500

Some colleges will offer you 100% funding with such a low income. In my state, there are initiatives paid for by taxes to assure funding for very low income students. If I were you, I would write those letters, then I would hand carry them to the colleges. I'd call and make an appointment with the head of financial aid and talk to them - explaining that you filed on time, just hit the wrong button. I find in big schools, that there is such bureaucracy that if you just send a letter, I have no doubt that it would sit there in the file until they decide to deal with appeals.
