Help Out Student in Dilemma(By chancing)? I chance back

University of Michigan and NYU are matches, as well as Cornell. I have family at several of these schools including Columbia. With that said, I think you should apply to Columbia EA if that is the school you truly want to go to. I have seen how that school can truly transform someone for the better, and just because it is a reach for everyone does not mean you shouldn’t give it your best shot. Your ECs look decent and your scores look excellent. I think you have a solid chance at Columbia EA. I wish you the best of luck!

@student9988 thanks! Lmk if u want me chancing you back

@student9988 wait so what keeps my ECs from being “excellent”?

@student9988 in other words, what can I do to improve it? Also what do you think my chances are for NU and U chicago

They look good don’t get me wrong, but for ivies I don’t see anything that really stands out as extraordinary. When it comes to ivies you really need to show them that you are focusing on what you love and putting your time into it. I’m not saying you have to find the holy grail or a cure for caner, but it just seems like you have a few different, unrelated club positions here and there. I’m sure many others would consider them excellent but for ivies it’s good to have extracurriculars that reflect your deep interests and involve the community.

Also, what have you done over the summer? For example, did you take part in any research opportunities or shadowing?

@student9988 I do see your point and it is a very good one but I’ll elaborate further. I’m interested in statistics and I want to study economics through that. Again, for research, I will be interning at the American statistical association. This involves working with a professional statistician and finishing a project that I choose. The economics club was for me to teach others economics in absence of an AP course. When the day of the competition came, the club got into 3 groups of 3 and placed 2nd 4th and 5th in the state after a year of preparation from me. DECA was for me to practice that too. I’m in business finance services which is quantitative analysis. I also tutor people on DECA events in this club. Then Asian club prepares me for the future because I learn about Asian culture in other Asian countries besides mine and I will likely have to be able to work with other Asian cultures in my line of profession. Interact is giving back to the community on a local level. This might actually be unrelated but i feel really lucky to be living in the town I’m in so I wanted to do something for it. I can’t relate the sports with anything.

Something weird is that people say diversify your app but then they also say focus on somethings. I guess it’s hard to do both.

I get what you mean and I wonder that myself. At the same time, I think it’s great to show them that you are well-rounded. I guess the line between a pattern of interest and the state of being well rounded depends on the reader and the school. Either way, I think you have an excellent chance at the schools you are looking at. Sometimes it just comes down to luck. Have you already written your essays?

I have. Thanks for asking. I realize it really comes down to that.

@student9988 would you suggest anything for the essay?

Are you referring to the Common App essay? For any college essay it really depends on what you are talking about and how you present it. I am in the process of writing mine now. You really want to be unique and offer a personal perspective so they can see the person beyond the numbers.

@student9988 Oh okay. Thanks for that. Do you want me to chance you?

You already did, thank you. Good luck!

I think you are a solid applicant at Columbia. You would have good chances without ED; you’d probably be a low reach, but with ED I would consider you a match. Being Asian may hurt you a bit, but it won’t be the deciding factor. With your scores, I am confident that you will get in. Use the ED on Columbia. Good luck!

I would use your ED at Columbia. You are competitive here and that would give you another edge. Do not think of it as a waste, because you are extremely competitive at your other choices. If you’re really serious about Columbia, apply their as ED, and let the rest fall into place. I wish you the best of luck.

With a family income of $80-100k can you pay for Columbia? If you apply ED and are admitted you MUST withdraw all other applications to other schools. You will not receive your financial aid package from Columbia until April and you will never know what the other schools can give you. You as a student only qualify for $5500 in student loans the first year. Make sure you can pay before you lock in. I know someone who got into Harvard, middle class, and ended up not being able to afford it.

@OspreyCV22 When you say until April, do you mean we get the money starting second year?

Hey!! Thanks for chancing me, trying to return the favor. As far as Columbia, RD I’d see you as a match (being Asian might push you too low reach but that is a big might). Honestly, the only reason ED admit %s look so enticing is bc that’s when all the athletes and legacies apply. As a personal preference, I dislike the entire notion of ED. It’s good for fringe applicants to try and buff up their (ie 2200-50 trying to increase odds). But for qualified applicants like you (2300+) ED doesn’t really present any significant pluses. Additionally, like previous posters have mentioned, ED acceptance locks you in. What happens if you get into Columbia ED with a not so nice fi aid package, but UMich or NYU offers you massive aid? That would be pretty sucky. Anyway, don’t stress too much. Your stats are all solid. Try pulling all As 1st semester of senior year to buff up your GPA. Other than that, you should get into AT LEAST one of those schools. Best of Luck!!

@anon87 Thanks!
