HELP!! Please solve my queries.

I will be passing my 12th board exam[CBSE] in May this year. And I decided to do transfer at top U.S colleges by applying at fall 2013. I have various questions regarding admissions and grades, I will be very thankful to you if you can solve my all queries:-
1. MIT, Caltech tuitions fees are $55,000, is that for 1 yr or whole academic life.
2. What is transcript and what should have in it.
3. My school teacher's are south Indian and some north also some Marathi's, do admission people call the school to verify the details.
4. As I am applying transfer, will they call my school to verify the grades and other details.
5. My EC's participation list is very large and not have enough space to write all of these, should I write that on other blank page.
6. Where can I get Transcript format or raw copy of Indian High School, and also CommonApp sample[by Indian student only].
7. How many Indians apply for tranfers at MIT, Caltech, UCB etc.
8. I have given 12th CBSE exam[ongoing], A Level and also applied to EPGY and CTY[Decision pending], in my board exams physics raped me and it lowers my grade, then should I submit only 10th CBSE and A Level or EPGY||CTY instead of CBSE 12th Board.
****Some more question can arise but as of now stick with this, I will posting more soon in this thread.
IT IS BETTER TO MAKE THIS POST STICKY AS IT ANSWERS EVERY QUESTIONS AN INDIAN HAVE IN HIS MIND.

1 year.

Your report cards will suffice mostly. You can get your school to just copy the grades to a letterhead and that’s called the transcript.

Ethnicity/Race has nothing to do with anything as far as your teachers are concerned. If you mean they won’t be able to talk in English, that’s cool. They’ll understand. And no, they generally don’t call. Depends on how fishy your app looks.

No. Your school will send the details itself, with its own letterhead and preferably own fax machine. Not unless it looks fishy, like I said. Why’re you so concerned about this point?

There’s an additional info section in the Common App and most other apps. You can surely add it there. But stick with the 10 most important, if you can.

There’s no real format. The school needs to state that you’re a registered student enrolled from so till so/present, and your grades are as follows, and if there are any specific points colleges should keep in mind (grade deflation etc.) and if it gives a class rank, and if it’s English medium or not, etc. Format doesn’t matter.

Very few, I’m guessing, since transfer students barely have a chance, even as domestic applicants, to MIT. No idea about hard numbers.

No idea what EPGY is. Tizil might know.

And I doubt this covers every question an Indian may have.

1year

It contains all your scholastic academic details including marks in school exams, board exams etc…

Unless you write something fishy, contradictory or weird, they wont take pains to call.

No specific reason. If you try transfer, I guess you will have to submit them a college transcript containing 1st Sem exam results.

Depends on college but for MIT caltech and other top colleges → NO.

just google the internet. Generally transcript should be similar to your progress report card and should contain nearly everything it contains.

No Idea… probably very few as most colleges give no financial aid to transfers. Also most people with such aspirations take a drop and apply for regular admission rather than transfer.

I dont think you can do that. You will have to submit 12th CBSE results as you have appeared for the exam.

Suggestion: try for spring admissions.

^MIT always has space for additional info.

Agreed, but unless you have really good ECs to write, my suggestion is don’t fill additional info with them. for example : don’t write “First in school in NSO/NSTSE”.

@compact thanks for your suggestion and when admissions in spring is going to start.
But my father is forcing me to do transfer and id get admission with fin aid then u can go to that college.
My father is not agreeing for gap year.

@canhazphysics when they contact school and I should tell my school that too.

transcript should have 9,10,11,12 or 10,12 are enough to show them.
my 9,11 are very bad as I am avg studnt.

MIT, Caltech tuitions fees are $55,000, is that for 1 yr or whole academic life.
That is Tuition+acoomodationetc. and that is for 1 yr only, unless you get Financial Aid.

What is transcript and what should have in it.
Transcript is your grades of 9th to 12th including terminal exams, which is officially signed by your principal.

My school teacher’s are south Indian and some north also some Marathi’s, do admission people call the school to verify the details.
They don’t contact the school authority unless they find something to doubt in your application!

As I am applying transfer, will they call my school to verify the grades and other details.
As a transfer application you will also have to send your colleges’ first year transcript along with schools.
They will still need the official school transcript.

My EC’s participation list is very large and not have enough space to write all of these, should I write that on other blank page.
You can, But best is for you to write only 10 that matter most to you.

Where can I get Transcript format or raw copy of Indian High School, and also CommonApp sample[by Indian student only].
Transcripts formats are schools own. And Common application can be veiwed online on its own web site. It is not different for Indian students.

How many Indians apply for tranfers at MIT, Caltech, UCB etc.
Chances of admission as transfer student are very much less than as a Freshman, and also depends on the image of your present college in their eyes. i.e. if you are in IIT, then you definitely stand more chances.

I have given 12th CBSE exam[ongoing], A Level and also applied to EPGY and CTY[Decision pending], in my board exams physics raped me and it lowers my grade, then should I submit only 10th CBSE and A Level or EPGY||CTY instead of CBSE 12th Board.
you can substitute A level for CBSE but not EPGY or CTY.
They are just summer programs!
Have you cleared A Levels? How many subjects? Will your school give you a transcript for A levels if you are in CBSE?

I think you will have more chance of admission if you take a gap year and apply as a Freshman Next year.
But that is my opinion only, and can be wrong.

That’s just for one year. Not all four years.

Transcript is your report card. It should have all your individual yearly grades and your final aggregates.

Sometimes. How does it matter where your school’s teachers are from?

Colleges usually accept transfers in the second year. I don’t know if it is possible to transfer in the first year. They might.

It’s quality and not quantity. However, if you would like, there is always (or mostly) an “Additional Information” section where you can write the extraneous ECs. Try and keep the most important ones in the provided space for ECs.

There is no general ‘format’. Refer to point 2.

You could check the common data sets for these colleges. However, I doubt colleges release this information to the general public. I doubt they would even record the number of transfer applications from a particular country.

If the colleges ask for it, you’ll have to send it in. You could, and I’m not sure, substitute A levels for the CBSE XII Board.

Hope this helped :)

Agreed. Freshman admissions are any day better than transfer admissions :p

@p25india
2.“Transcript is your grades of 9th to 12th including terminal exams, which is officially signed by your principal.”- should that also be included in transcript.

4.“As a transfer application you will also have to send your colleges’ first year transcript along with schools.
They will still need the official school transcript.”- that should be send by me or school.

I am not from IIT but can be from BITS,Manipal, DU, IISC, IIHT, DCE.

I sat for A Level exam privately at British Council and my school doesn’t know about that. Should I tell my head to provide transcript for A Level.

MIT, Caltech tuitions fees are $55,000, is that for 1 yr or whole academic life.
One year. So around $220,000 for 4 years, so its a HUGE investment.

What is transcript and what should have in it.
Average grades for class 9, 10, 11, 12. Class rank, average class marks would be helpful too.

My school teacher’s are south Indian and some north also some Marathi’s, do admission people call the school to verify the details.
They only call if they find inconsistencies, or if they are very unfamiliar with your grading policies.

As I am applying transfer, will they call my school to verify the grades and other details.
As long as the transcript you’re sending is signed and stamped by your school counselor/principal there shouldn’t be any issue.

My EC’s participation list is very large and not have enough space to write all of these, should I write that on other blank page.
Stick to only the best EC’s. Quality over quantity, always. Also, stuff like English Club isn’t gonna add much to your app.

Where can I get Transcript format or raw copy of Indian High School, and also CommonApp sample[by Indian student only].
Common Apps are filled by identically by all students worldwide, and you should try keep your transcript like one from a US high school, so Google for an American sample.

How many Indians apply for tranfers at MIT, Caltech, UCB etc.
It’s highly unlikely that any college will reveal these numbers.

I have given 12th CBSE exam[ongoing], A Level and also applied to EPGY and CTY[Decision pending], in my board exams physics raped me and it lowers my grade, then should I submit only 10th CBSE and A Level or EPGY||CTY instead of CBSE 12th Board.
You have to send your 12th marks. Otherwise, it counts as not having graduated from high school. Plus, EPGY/CTY don’t count as school work, so they don’t go on your transcript.

Try convince your father about the benefits of a gap year. Also, ask others to look at your EC’s to figure out the best ones. Best of luck :)

I’m almost certain that the A Levels can’t fill in for your CBSE scores. As long as you’re enrolled in a CBSE school, you’ll have to show them that you passed Class 12, and the only conceivable way to do that would be to send them your CBSE score card.

I do know people who’ve applied as freshmen (and eventually quit and moved to the US) even though they enrolled in a university. I’m not sure if this is allowed, but that could be an option.

You’ve mentioned that you need financial aid- unfortunately, aid for transfers is almost non existent.

You can get admission on A level grades only if you submit A Level transcript by enrolling in A Level school. If you are enrolled in CBSE school, then they will give you CBSE Transcript.

I am also an A Level student, enrolled in school affiliated to Cambridge International Board, and have been admitted to US universities.

Btw, why don’t you want to send your CBSE score card?

But overall transfer admissions are more difficult and nearly without Aid!

To answer your question, Transcripts are sent by the school or uploaded on line by the school.

@p25india
I don’t want to send my CBSE 12th score card because I have very poor score in Physics that is C. So it will affect my admission application.

If Transfer application don’t get financial aid then it is damn sure that I will broke into fine pieces.

You could try and take a physics AP or SAT2 exam independently to make up for the poor CBSE marks though.

@sigatots
AP Physics can substitute cbse physics.

You’ll have to send your board marks, but if you have a high SATII or AP or A level score in physics, they’ll know the exam was a one-off.

You’ll have to give the AP this may otherwise it won’t count though.

you are at a loss for 2 things if you apply as Transfer student:

  1. your chance of admission is much less
  2. Fin. Aid
And again you still have to send your CBSE transcript and 12 th board score card!
