Hi guys, I am helping my friend find a college, hopefully you guys can help!

Her stats are:
GPA: 88 (W) Our school doesn't have UW
SATs: Around 1800~1900 (waiting for nov. results)
ECs: Moderately good
Recs: 2 in process, probably good

Please help recommend her some colleges, preferably in the Northeastern US. She's interested in business, but she's still unsure about her major. Thanks!

what state are you from? and how much are you willing to pay? I would suggest looking at Penn State, Rutgers, UConn, Syracuse, maybe Maryland if the scores are increased, Villanova if the scores are increased.

We are from New York and I’m not sure how much she’s willing to pay. So let’s just go for any amount for now, maybe like a median amount of tuition (~30k).

Look in-state. Depending on intended major: Albany, Stony, New Paltz,…

definitely look at stonybrook and binghamton and hunter. What kind of area are you looking for in the northeast something rural or urban and how big of a school size wise?

She probably prefers something more urban, the school should probably be a median size. Nothing too small, I guess a large school would be ok. Thanks for all your help guys!

For urban I would say look at temple or Drexel and maybe Boston university as a reach.

Okay, thanks for the input so far :)! Anyone else?

To be perfectly honest, until she knows what her family can pay, and whether or not she qualifies for federal and state aid (for NY schools), there isn’t much point in this exercise. You could easily end up with a list of great places that are perfect for her in every way except affordability - which would make that list useless.

She doesn’t care much about affordability, under 30k is fine, I even gave an estimate. She just needs help in a list of colleges because she doesn’t have a clear direction. Affordability is a big part of college selection, but not all of it; no need to call it useless, you can always make ends meet. She doesn’t qualify much for aid either. It’s not like every college people are going to list, she can’t afford; we can always derive from what we have so far.

Unfortunately, not everyone can “always make ends meet”. Affordability is a huge issue. If her budget limit is 30k, and she isn’t going to qualify for much need-based aid, then she is going to have a challenge finding anything that is private, or that is an out-of-state public that will be affordable for her. If she needs to learn more about financial aid, she should visit [FinAid! Financial Aid, College Scholarships and Student Loans](http://www.finaid.org) and read through some of the threads in the Financial Aid Forum here.

Since the college-matching search engines aren’t set up to search by total Cost of Attendance (COA), have her run them with the out-of-state tuition and fees set at 20k (leaving about 10k for housing, meals, books, transportation, etc). Then she can check the ones that do turn up for their actual COA. It is buried somewhere in the website.

And of course as she’s already heard umpteen times, the CUNY and SUNY system will almost certainly be affordable for her, and there are lots of good options there.

You are a good friend to give her a hand with this! Good luck to both of you.
