My son is currently in his Junior year of high school (class of 2013). After going on a major college tour the past two days, we've realized that we need to get him involved over the summer to get him prepared for the rigors of college. Also, my son is very interested in engineering/medical field so he wants to get himself involved in some research opportunities before he goes to college next year. Does anyone know of any good/worthwhile research programs or even summer programs in the New York area? And if not in the New York area, one where he can dorm? Thank you all so much for any time/concern you've given this thread and hopefully this will help out other parents in need.

Have you checked with the guidance office at your child’s school? Typically they have listings of summer programs. Or check online. I get lots of ideas from websites of other high schools, especially the more rigorous college prep ones.

Guidance counselors’ offices receive lots of flyers at this time of the year for summer programs of all shapes and sizes. If you can afford to pay, I’m sure that you can find a program that fits what he wants to do. The ones that are free are pretty competitive, though.

I would look at the colleges and universities in your area to see if they offer any summer programs. Our daughter is a junior and interested in majoring in engineering in college, and we just looked online at some colleges in our area to see what sort of programs they offer to high school students during the summer. We found a program through the University of Wisconsin. It is an almost week long engineering camp for high school girls entering their Junior and Senior year. The program goes from Sunday through Friday and it looks like the campers will get to do a lot of interesting engineering related things. The campers are staying there for the week in one of the dorms, and the best part is that it was very inexpensive because it is subsidized by the Society of Women Engineers. My daughter is very excited about this because she wants to learn more about engineering and also see if she really does want to major in it in college. She is also going to a 10 day medical conference at UIC (University of Illinois in Chicago). Right now she is thinking that she wants to major in biomedical engineering, and both of these programs are happening at the right time for her, right before she applies to college. Hopefully this will give her a lot of direction as she makes the decision about what she wants to major in. Perhaps if you look in your area, you can find something similar for your child? Good luck!

Thank you to all those who replied! I really appreciate the help and support of this forum. And I’ll be sure to check with the guidance office; I can’t believe I forgot about that!

@ladyham I wish your daughter the best of luck! Admission is so competitive these days but it’s really great to get a head start. I’m hoping for similar opportunities for my son so he can get a smooth transition from high school to college. It’s so exciting, isn’t it?
