Hello. I am currently looking for research opportunities for the summer of this year. I am a current high school junior in NY. I tried asking my guidance counselor for help over spring break (March 22) and she said to come to her when we got back to school in-person. I asked last period and she ended up just showing me $6,000 summer school programs at colleges not the research opportunities I asked her to help with. Additionally, I told her that and she showed me ones where the deadlines were over. I was wondering if you guys know of any summer research opportunities in NY over the summer. I live in southern NY near Newburgh, NY (1 hour from NYC) and my intended major is CS (research doesn’t necessarily have to be in CS; I want to do research plus I can put it in my college applications, especially since I will also apply to Ivy League schools and MIT). Also, if necessary, I have WELL over a 100 average when weighted and am top of my class if a transcript must be submitted. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
I’ve heard of people emailing professors at local universities and asking to be research assistants over the summer. Some will cold email up to 20 from different schools, explaining they’re passionate about the subject and want to be involved in research and helping the professor.
If you are looking for something, ANYTHING, to do so that you can describe it as “research” on a college application in the hope of getting into an Ivy or MIT, it may not have the positive effect that you think it might. College admissions officers are pretty good at sniffing out projects that are done simply for the purpose of padding one’s application.
There’s also nothing wrong, from a college application standpoint, of getting a paying summer job.
