I scored a 34 on my ACTs (35 if superscored) and a 1440 on my SAT CR+M. I am looking for colleges that offer high merit scholarships to people with my credentials. I know Ole Miss, LSU, Kentucky, Alabama, and Miami of Ohio offer full (or nearly full) tuition for my test scores. I am particularly interested in any colleges in California, Colorado, or Washington, but I am open to schools anywhere in the US. Even if a school is just renowned for giving out lots of competitive scholarships, your input is still appreciated. Please give your suggestions on where I should apply. Thank You
What do you need for your net costs to be?
What is your major?
Calif and Wash are not great for large merit unless you don’t mind still having a high net cost. The UCs are lousy with merit, UWash is lousy with merit.
However, U San Diego is known for giving up to $20k per year in merit for high stats, but you’d still have a $35k per year bill.
Santa Clara has gotten more tight with its merit. A few years ago, I would be almost certain that you’d get a $25k per year award. Now, you might not get anything.
USanFrancisco might give you half tuition, leaving you with about $40k to pay, same with SeattleU and LMU.
There are some even lesser known schools that might give you half tuition or more.
Colorado Mines gives merit, but I don’t think the awards are big.
UW gives four year merit scholarships to OOS US students that have been in the $7,500 to $9,000 per year range in recent years. About half of admitted OOS US students were awarded some merit scholarship. Not a ton of money, but definitely not “lousy.”
If you have a high GPA and solid extra-curriculars, USC gives out sizeable merit scholarships to some deserving recipients. You should definitely also apply to Tulane.

I doubt that. Where are you seeing that stat??? Maybe half of the enrolled OOS students received some kind of merit, but I doubt that half of the admitted OOS students received merit. I would imagine that the many OOS who got nothing didn’t enroll because it was too expensive. Avg merit award is $6400.
And, I do consider $7k - 9k per year as lousy. OOS cost is $48k per year. So, a $6400 avg discount is not much. A $9k max discount isn’t much.
What was your PSAT score and what state are you from?
If your GPA matches your other stats, you should have plenty of choices. University of New Mexico may be a good match. If your GPA is lower, you’ll still have choices but they will obviously be more limited. If you make NMSF/NMF that can open doors as well.
@lbarnhart Washington & Lee awards 10% of each class a free ride plus a stipend. It is one of the few top schools that has such a broad merit program. It is called the Johnson Scholarship.
Tulane and Case Western provide up to 75% tuition scholarship for high stats students, which you would be with that score if you took a rigorous schedule of classes and have a GPA unweighted above 3.75. Ohio State also offers an attractive scholarship for out of state students. NC State offers the Park Scholarship to about 30 out of state students each year, which includes 100% of tuition, housing and fees. It is very competitive and requires a separate application. Finalists get smaller scholarships, and NC State has a very reasonable OOS tuition of under $35,000 compared to private schools.
The amount of the UW purple and gold scholarship award is stated in the admission letter. The info is from the UW website. $7,500 to $9,000 off of an already competitively priced OOS tuition of $31,500 is a good incentive.
203 and Pennsylvania. I wasn’t a national merit scholarship
Whitman College in Walla Walla Washington is definitely something to check out. My DD got in with a lower ACT and was awarded a $15k scholarship without even asking for it; she got into an Ivy ( no scholarship since the Ivys are need based in their awards) but would likely have gone to Whitman otherwise.
This is not true. From that list only Ole Miss and Alabama offer automatic full tuition for your stats. Miami of Ohio offers automatic half tuition, possibly full tuition. Kentucky only offers automatic full tuition+ (nearly full ride) scholarships for NMF. LSU has no full tuition automatic scholarships at all. Kentucky and LSU have competitive scholarships of that magnitude, but it is not certain you would receive them.
