HELP!!! Should I go to an out of state community college?

Hey everyone! I created this forum to ask a question about a major decision. I am an 18 year old guy. I live in Illinois and I want to go to a community college in Texas. I am currently at a CC in Illinois with good grades. My family lives here, but I can’t say I love it here. It is my hometown and the city is my roots, but I want to go to school in Houston. My dad’s side of the family lives in Houston and told me I would be able to live with her while I attend CC for 1 year. I will then transfer to a University…hopefully Rice, UH, or Texas. I really love it there, but my parents disapprove. They’re saying its a stupid idea and I should wait. They think i will fail and won’t make it there. I’ve been to Houston every summer for the past 10 years and I still love it. I want to experience something new and explore. Anything can happen, but I don’t want to make the wrong decision. What do you think I should do? It will cost moving some of my stuff and extra expenses, but my grandma said she will pay for food and it will be free to live with her. I’m jib searching this summer so I can start in the fall. Any opinions?

How will you pay for school? You will be considered an OOS student.

I’ve been in this situation on the receiving end like your grandmother. She’ll take care of you so go now and don’t look back. Best of luck!

Your parents are afraid because you’re leaving. Have you given them a reason to worry - getting in trouble in high school, drinking, getting bad grades, acting irresponsible? I’d not, then they’re sad you’re leaving and are trying to keep you with them, which is natural, but it’s also natural for a young man to want and try to spread his wings and discover another part of the country.
The main issue is cost: you’ll be OOS. How will you be able to pay the OOS tuition? Will you be working and only taking 3classes in order to qualify for in state tuition or will you be dull time OOS right away?

You love Houston? You must not be playing with a full deck…

jk, the real question is what the other posters are asking - how will you pay for it? Does the CC there have better transfer agreements with Rice, UH, etc.?

In my personal experience, I ended up paying for the first semester which wasn’t that expensive compared to a private school. My nephew paid the second semester when he became a resident. He couldn’t afford it right off the bat. It looks like the OP has a plan but I suspect his grandmother will assist him as I did.

My parents don’t have any troubles with me. I’m a pretty good kid. I’m applying for scholarships and waiting to hear back from the companies. I will continue to be out of state until I claim myself. The costs for 1 year will be around $5,000. My parents are helping me pay, but I will be working to help provide for myself. I have so many extra expenses but my dad said he can help cover it. My mom is against it but my dad is starting to understand. I just do not want struggle.

Then, they have to come around to the idea. It’s an adjustment for them. You’ll be living with your grandmother, which will be good for you and her. In Houston, if you do well, you’ll automatically be able to continue to UHouston, but if you do really, really well you’ll be able to apply for one of the US’s top colleges, Rice University. So, what’s not to like?

You have a good plan, and having a place to live is the key to your transition. You’re very fortunate to have a relative assist you and I am confident all will work out. Best of luck.
