Help! Something Happened to my Scores

Took the SAT for the first time October 1st. Had taken PSAT last two years and multiple practice tests.
PSAT scores from last year: M:64, CR: 80, W: 79

SAT scores from 10/1 test: M:660, CR: 800, W: 630! (mc: 63, essay: 9)

That is a 160 point drop! I am guessing the essay score is accurate, but I know that the Writing MC score is not right. On all of my practice tests, and of course the PSAT, I never got more than 3 wrong, the last several I took I only got 1-2 wrong each time. Even if I choked, there is no way I got 3x as many wrong. I have ordered the Score Verification Service - is that the right way to go. I am applying EA and I was depending on scores of 800 CR, 660 M, and at least 780 W. Should I no longer apply EA or should I hope that the Score Verification Service uncovers whatever happened and increases my score before they make their final admissions decisions? I don't know what do. Any advice?

Ugh I have the same problem, somehow my writing score dropped 110 points… from a 740 to a 630?! I don’t get how this is possible… my first sat was a 740 writing and my practice tests since then have all been 760+… Should I order score confirmation or w\e?

Honestly, I was not expecting my writing score either, but the curve this year was pretty harsh for that section so you only may have missed a couple more than you usually do but gotten a significantly lower score due to the curve. Also, the 9 on your essay factors in to your score and affects it quite a bit, which could be the main thing lowering your score. Keep in mind that the PSAT and all of your practice tests did not have graded essays factored into your score, so that is probably why your score is much lower than you thought it would be.

Also, a 63 MC means you missed around 7-8 questions, maybe even less due to the tough curve. That’s not too far off from the typical amount you said you miss, so it probably is the essay that is lowering your score so much.

And like I said, I am in a similar situation as you are (but not as drastic) and am considering ordering Score Verification. I think I missed about the same amount of questions as I usually do, but my score is not reflective of that. Unfortunately I’m pretty sure that it’s just that meaaaan curve they decided on. -____-

That does seem weird, probably a fluke- you could have just been randomly off, or maybe something went wrong- I would suggest looking into Score Verification, and if you were just off don’t worry about it, just retake when you get the chance- if you’ve been doing well and this was weird for you, you should be fine the second time :)

What makes you think the bad score is the fluke?

Wow! I have the same problem! I was expecting a 600-650 writing, but I got a freaken 500! I am in shock!! I swore I did like multiple practice tests and only got about 10-12 wrong…

Thanks for all your help. I will openly admit to not being good at a lot of things - including, obviously, SAT math, but I am confident in my abilities on the SAT Writing section - at least 780 confident. I am 99% certain that something happened on the College Board’s end, but I think I will re-take the SAT in November just in case I completely lost it (which I have never on any test including the CR or M of the October SAT). That way, I know my EA college will get my true SAT Writing score.

I was also surprised by my writing score-- I had been practice testing at about 730, but got 660, up only 10 points from when i took it in January… but the chances of a mis-score are extremely slim.

Are you going to doing something about it? is there way to resolve the concern?
