Help! Trying to drop a class but not sure if it will affect my decision

Hey everybody,

I’m an in state applicant who applied early action to Chapel Hill. I expect to either be accepted or deferred here in the coming weeks, but am facing a bit of a dilemma about my high school courses. I have a 4th period class that I want to drop, but am not sure if this could potentially make UNC rescind my acceptance or lower my chances after being deferred. The class is an honors level social studies elective, but I don’t remember signing up for the course, nor do I feel that I have the time to excel in the class. My other classes consist of 2 AP’s and a high level honors art class. Do you think my excuse for dropping a class would be acceptable?

Contact your admissions officer at the college and ask.

If you have met all the basics, have a decent # of advanced and AP classes, your decision to drop a class should not affect anything. EA decisions are done and you should know today or shortly thereafter. That decision was made on your previous academic record and as long as you don’t totally blow your final semester, you will be fine. If you are deferred, they will ask for mid-year grades to be self-reported. I doubt they will look into your current schedule to assess academic rigor.

Before arriving on campus you are required to submit a final, official transcript of your academic record.

Here is what UNC says about it:: “The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill reserves the right to rescind any offer of admission made if discrepancies between unofficial and official transcript(s) are found.”

Sit back, relax and hopefully a positive outcome will come your way. Best of luck to you.

My son wanted to drop 1 AP course, & replace it with another for 2nd semester. We wrote emails to both NC State & Chapel Hill asking if the change could hurt him. NC State, said most likely would not, but could not make a guaruntee. Chapel Hill, told us that it would not hurt him.
You had to submit all classes for the year in your common application & are obligated to inform them of any changes. I would send them an email of what your intentions are & see what they have to say…
