My parents are really unsupportive of my choosing to try out new extracurriculars. All they want me to do is pretty much bump my SAT score from a 2230 to a 2400, but the very last thing i need is for colleges to think that i am a grade grubber. Honestly, how can I persuade my parents to stop being so foolish and allow me to the extracurriculars that I want? Furthermore, anything that I want to do that requires some work such as fundraising they completely object to.
Find your favorite teacher who’s also a club sponsor. Call a conference with your parents and said teacher. Hopefully, said teacher can show that clubs are an integral part of the high school experience. In addition, pull up some common data sets for schools you’re interested in (google "(school) common data set) and scroll down to where it says (inevitably) that extracurriculars are among the most important pieces of your application.
Put some effort into explaining the importance of extracurriculars for the top schools. There’s a lot of info out there to support this case. On a side note, it’s not that ridiculous to to re-take a 2230, honestly pretty tough call depending on where you want to go (don’t worry about grade grubber thing but you def want to spend some time on ECs).
