Help! UofSC vs UPitt

I have now been accepted to both UofSC and UPitt, which were my top two college choices. I now have the awesome, but hard task of choosing which one I want to officially go to. Any advice or personal experience with either college would really help me out! I'd love to live in a city like Pittsburgh, but I also want to go to one of the big classic colleges like UofSC. My reasoning is that if I go to UofSC for undergraduate, I could go into the city for my graduate studies. Dont be afraid to voice your opinions! Thanks!

@collegekid6676 It might help to tell us what you are planning to go to school for so they can give you advice based on those programs.

What is your major, your career goal, and the amount that your family will pay?

What are your stats?

UofSC was one of my D’s final choices 2 years ago (UPitt Honors was the first college acceptance she received.) However, Pitt was dropped from the list because their financial aid wasn’t nearly as generous as SC.

Have you visited the campuses? We saw UofSC in April: D felt overwhelmed by the sheer no. of students she saw, although the campus is stunning (far nicer than our state flagship U) and easy to navigate. However, it wasn’t as diverse as she had hoped and flights were expensive (not many airlines fly there from NE) in comparison to other cities.

Just out of interest, is that Southern Cal or South Carolina?

If you like them both pretty equally and both are good for your intended field of study, I’d pick based upon the better finances - even if finances aren’t an issue. You can take the extra $$ and start saving for a house or take a nice trip or donate it to a good cause or a million other things.

I am planning on majoring in… wait for it… psychology. I know it has a bad connotation to it, but I am planning on putting in the effort and schooling needed to go far in the psychological society. I would like to eventually get my doctorate and become a professor of psych at a large college, where I can teach, and do research for the school.

Finances may be a big part, but I am in no dire situation relating to money. I have heard though that Pitt does not give much aid at all.

I have toured both colleges, and loved both of them equally, but for different reasons.

Hope that helps!

???

What does that mean? What are your parents SAYING? UPitt is over $40k per year. How much of that will they pay? If you’re OOS, you won’t get aid.

If you’re OOS, Pitt won’t give you ANY need-based aid. However, even if you’re OOS, Pitt will give you merit money if you’ve an exceptional resumé with a very high GPA and very high CR+M. My D went there and likes it. Interested in neuroscience, which is very good there and has been for decades. My niece is a psych and english major with a french minor (it’s easier to do double majors plus at Pitt than most schools). Honors dorm is nice if you can tolerate pre-meds and cardiac hill. Lots of city activities including theater, opera, museums, kayaking, sports teams, galleries, etc. Big time city life in Pittsburgh. Looked at UofSC, too, but the diversity and the flags on the state capitol event killed the interest.
