Hello fellow CCers, I'm in a state of panic. I have about one week left until I must make my commitment decisions and of course, to make matters worse, my #1 college UCLA put me on their wait list. I know, sweet right?
However, I fortunately was accepted to NYU, my 2nd choice as of currently. Here's the dilemma:

NYU's commitment fee and housing fee (all due before May 1st) is ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS.

I can't afford to waste $1K, and when I tried calling UCLA to find out any info on the wait list progress so far, I was quickly denied and told "no decisions will be released until after May 1st".

What should I do? Should I call on Friday after they have made some progress? I know I'm not the only one that could lose money on SIR'ing, but not necessarily $1,000! Do you think I should keep trying, hoping for one that's sympathetic?

Pay for NYU because UCLA is not for certain. Better lose a thousand dollars then not go to either school right? There’s no perfect answer for you but if NYU is your top school you were accepted to, COMMIT. Because most likely UCLA will not pull through and you won’t go to either.

You should just SIR to NYU. By the admission numbers and this year’s competitiveness, UCLA may not be pulling anyone off of the waitlist. Just look on and take what you already have. Im in the same situation as you and I have SIRed to UCSD already.

I agree with above. I think you should treat the UCLA WL as a rejection, and if it comes through, fabulous! But, cross that bridge when you come to it. Put down the deposit at NYU and assume that is where you are going.

Definitely don’t wait. If you can afford to go to NYU, you should put down the deposit. Is it refundable if you end up getting into UCLA? Very few typically get pulled from the waitlist at UCLA, so you really need to make other plans.
Good luck!
