Help with first semester Biz Econ classes

I was wondering if i could get some help planning a fall freshman schedule for a Biz Econ major. Looking for a nice easy transition quarter. Any suggestions for a first quarter class schedule?

Easy transition is what you are looking for?

Well, due to scheduling conflicts and the like, here’s what I’m going to suggest and leave somewhat “open”. You may already have credit for some of these classes (via AP Econ or AP Calc) but I’m going to assume you don’t.

By the end of freshman year, I suggest you have completed the following (also, I’m assuming you will somewhat follow the ECP transition and go with 3-3-4 classes for your first year)…
Math 31a
Math 31b
Econ 1
Econ 2
Mgmt 1a
Mgmt 1b
English Comp III (univ requirement)
GE / Writing II
GE
GE

Keep in mind 31a is not available in the spring, and the most abundant choices for it are in the fall. 31b has the most abundant choices in the winter quarter, so I would set those pretty much in stone for Fall (31a) and Winter (31b)

Binks-

Thanks for the reply. You don’t think taking Math 31a, Math 31b, Econ 1, Econ 2, Mgmt 1a, Mgmt 1b in the first three quarters of freshman year is to much? That leaves Econ 11, 41, and 101 over three quarters of sophmore year. Just sounds like an awful lot for the first three quarters, but youve been there and done it. Just looking for your opinion.

Quick question. What can you do with a Biz Econ major? It sounds really interesting but I have no idea what the job prospects would be. Accountant maybe? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Right now I’m just looking for suggestions on how to schedule classes for the first couple of quarters of the freshman year as a pre Biz Econ major

As far as job opportunities go, most students like myself who actually get into the major (it’s not that hard but it’s not a sure thing) usually pair it with the accounting minor (only an extra 4 classes) and then try to go into public accounting/consulting or something similar in the “business world”.

As far as the classes I gave, that’s the exact same thing I did…
Fall 09 = GE // GE // Math 31a
Winter 10 = GE // Math 31b // English Comp III
Spring 10 = GE w/ Writing II // Econ 1 // Mgmt 1a
Summer 10 = Mgmt 1b

In reality, I could have easily done another class or two (especially during Winter and Spring and foregone summer), but I took it easy and focused on those classes and did well in all of them.

Personally, I would try to have all of the pre-reqs done by Winter of Sophmore year, but for sure by the end of Spring sophomore year, that way you can apply for and be admitted to the major by your junior year.

This year at orientation the econ dept pretty much did not allow freshman to sign up for econ classes, so most people’s schedule for the year looked like this:

If you have to take math 31a/b:
Fall: Math 31a, GE, GE
Winter: Math 31b, Econ 1, GE
Spring: Econ 2, Mgmt 1A, GE

My schedule was different and looked like this, because I already got credit for math 31a/b:
Fall: GE, GE, GE
Winter: Econ 1, GE, GE (Writing II)
Spring: Econ 2, GE, GE

In retrospect, I should have taken Mgmt 1a or Econ 41 this quarter. There’s still more than enough time for me to finish everything before the end of next year though so no worries.

And you definitely don’t have to take 4 classes in any quarter if you don’t want to. It’s not necessary.

At orientation, they don’t want you to take Econ 1 in the first quarter and they’ll tell EVERYONE that.
But if you want to get ahead of the game (Pre Business Economics majors pretty much compete with each other), you can take Econ 1 in the first quarter (you just have to sign up for it after orientation, which is like September 1st or something).

Since the Pre Business Economics major doesn’t have that many classes, you should be fine no matter how late you do Econ 1. I know a few sophomores who decided to switch into Pre Business Economics.

My schedule was
Fall Quarter: Econ 1, GE, French 3, Eng Comp 3.
Winter Quarter: Econ 2, Math 32A, Math 33B.
Spring Quarter: Econ 11, Math 32B, GE, GE.

My math classes aren’t required, but that’s because I’m trying to see if I can do the Department Scholars Program.
