Help with Second Degree Computer Science in CUNY

Hey everyone, I'm new to the forum, but I've been contemplating going back to school ever since I graduated college with a BA in Media Studies back in May 2012. I graduated from CUNY Hunter so I'd like to stay in the CUNY system since I not only live in NYC, I also work a fulltime job to pay the bills. Sorry for the long post, but it gives you an idea of where I'm coming from on this.

To be honest, my time at Hunter featured a pretty lackluster performance on my part and the school didn't help. I was going to school full time and working 80 hours a week, and trying to have a social life. More often than not, I pushed school the wayside until I got serious during my last 2-3 semesters. My GPA was irrevocably damaged and I finished with less than a 2.5. I recently ordered a copy of my transcript to get my actual GPA but that takes 10 business days.

My attitude towards school has changed, and I know what I want to do with my schooling. While I was a student at Hunter I was inundated with a large number of GER courses and ended up with a pseudo Journalism/WebDesign major that I feel accomplishes nothing. It was during my last few semesters in school that I was introduced to WebDesign and I became quite enamored with the idea of building usable things such as programs and websites.

So now its back to get a BA in computer science and hopefully learn some more about coding and emerging technologies. Eventually I'd like to pursue a Masters as well.

When considering CUNY for Computer Science, what schools would you recommend considering my poor former GPA of <2.5? I should add that I'm also looking to graduate expediently (2-3 years at the maximum)

Bump for advice

Hi.
C.S. within CUNY is fairly competitive so I wonder about G.P.A. requirements. My suggestion is to go to the C.S. departments near you and ask for their advice. If you are in the area of Baruch College, look me up - happy to chat with you about our Computer Information Systems program (maybe think of Masters as opposed to another undergrad degree)

Cheers,
prof .H.

I’m doing the same thing (after a B.A. in Music from Yeshiva University). I was told by many New Yorkers whose siblings attended various schools that City College is known to have the best engineering department, and C.S. is part of this department there. I sat down with an admissions counselor at City College and he told me that the C.S. department requires Calc I, Calc II, and a Calc-based Physics just to apply for the major. (I applied for liberal arts for now.)
The website suggests that all the 4-year schools are a reach if your GPA is less than 3.0, but CUNY students usually say that a lower GPA isn’t a problem for most schools. I’ve heard that Baruch and Hunter are the ones to worry about, but Baruch doesn’t have C.S. and you’ve already done Hunter.
I am a bit worried b/c the admissions counselor at City College mentioned that 2.7 is the minimum GPA to apply to the CUNY system, and my own (college) GPA is a 2.6. People tend to think it doesn’t matter, but I’m scared it might?
As for the length of time, since a second degree is a transfer degree, the admissions counselor said that a C.S. degree could take up to 3 years only because of the sequential nature of some of the courses. I’m sure that it’s possible to get it done in 2 years if winter and summer sessions are taken advantage of.
Hope all this helps! Cool to see I’m not the only one :)
