I'm a rising senior, and I've chosen to take a lot of AP's next year. My only choice is between being in an upper level Spanish class or being the editor of my school's newspaper. I've talked to the adviser for the paper, and she says if I do come back, I will definitely be editor, but I can't do it unless I'm in the class. My college counselor, however, thinks I should be in the Spanish class if I want to get into my selected colleges (Duke, Wake Forest, UVA, etc.) Which would those colleges prefer to see?

I understand why my counselor said to take the Spanish class, but we have a very weak Spanish program.

Most selective schools will tell you to take 4 or close to 4 years of core classes, including foreign language. However, if writing is a huge part of your life and ECs, I’d advise pursuing that. It’ll also keep the inevitable insanity of your senior year in check. And three years of a foreign language should, at least officially, be fine for the colleges you named–check the websites to be sure.
