I always loved creative writing in high school. Any paper where I could just let my imagination run wild was always a blast. I don't know if all students enjoy creative writing as much as I do, but I really enjoyed writing with few boundaries or limits. Perhaps a fun project would be to somehow incorporate relevant material to high school kids such as current movies or trends. Perhaps there are current movies that are based upon books. Allow students to choose a movie/book pair and have them do some sort of assignment based on this. It is alot easier to write or work on something you are interested in than something that you feel forced to read.

I did this in freshman year so I guess it still counts: for a writing class we wrote a story where we would each write one line, then pass the incomplete story clockwise. The next person who got it would write a line too, then pass it again. By the end of the cycle, we'd each have this really messed up storyline and most of the time it's pretty funny. I forget what the lesson was, though.

I liked doing compare and contrast essays with allegories or one classic and one contemporary book/movie. Like Hamlet vs. The Lion King, Romeo and Juliet vs. West Side Story, Oedipus vs. The House of Sand and Fog, Frankenstein vs. Jurassic Park, Taming of the Shrew vs. 10 Things I Hate About You, etc.

We would do plays in the hallways about a specific Shakespeare play, It rotates every 3 years between tragedy, comedy and history. last year it was Twelfth Night and we did the first act, it was pretty good and funny, We chose themes to apply it to, for example my class did a Real World theme where every character in the Twelfth Night play was a pretend character on the show.

For process analysis, we had to make a dessert, write a creative essay that described the process for making it, read the essay to the class, and serve the dessert. It was yummy.

For US History we had to choose a decade in our group and come up with a creative and fun way to represent all of the major historical events, and other trends during the decade. We had a whole period. My group made posters, made a video, and did a skit. It was awesome. (We had the 70s btw) I guess for english you could something about a specific author or piece of literature.

to URICHMOND2010: yes--and I have, but it is always a little nice to find some inspiration from other people and see what has been experienced out there. ^^
