Help

Hey guys I'm currently a Sophomore that has decided that I want to go to boarding school for the next 2 years, but I'm having a few problems finding the right school. I'm not from a well-to-do family and my family don't have a very big disposable income to spend on the tuition and its kinda a hard to find out how much we can expect to see in financial aid. That's my first concern, my second concern is that its too late to apply to boarding school because its already December and i haven't taken the SATs or the PSATs which are required for most boarding schools. I was hoping someone on this forum could help me find a boarding school that has good financial aid, has rolling admissions, and is in the Mid-Atlantic or the Northeast. I look forward to your response and will appreciate all replies.

You need a standardized test score such as the SSAT, PSAT or SAT before asking for prep school recommendations. Also, need to know more about your interest, talents & accomplishments.

I currently have a 3.75 GPA and I’m takes mostly Honors classes though I’m also taking A.P US History. (My school only lets you take one AP class during your sophomore year.) My interests mostly lie in the social sciences and history, so I would like to go to a school that offers Economics, and Comparative Politics (my current school doesn’t offer any of those.) I took the SAT practice test on the College board test yesterday and got a 1590. I hope this helps.

You can still apply by filing the online applications by Jan 15 and taking the Jan SSAT. Andover is a need blind school with a good amount of FA. Choate has a good economics program. If you are a minority (not Asian) or from underrepresented states like the Dakotas and need FA, your chances are good. If not, you need a hook like athletics.

If your current HS is good but doesn’t have Economics, you can take those classes online or at your local CC or College.

We found out when we started applying a little after you that a lot of schools have a second, february cut off date that, as long as everything is in by then, you’re chances won’t be lower. I think this is just when they start actually looking at applications.
In the end it was taking the standardized tests in time that was the problem, but you’re a little ahead of us and there are more opportunities to take in the US than abroad.

Well I’m from Pennsylvania and I’m Indian(Asian) that won’t help with admissions, but i think that Andover is way above what i think i can get into(I know you don’t see that on these forums at all) but i can register to take the SAT on January 26th so that’s not a problem.

Lawrenceville, Peddie, Blair Academy in NJ and Hill School in PA are closer to you. They are somewhat easier to get in than the top NE schools. If your public high school is good, you can supplement the coursework with summer and online courses which are easily available, you will do well to get into a good college. It is how you do at your high school that matters most to colleges, not what high school you go to.

You should look at Phillips Andover in the Northeast. First of all, Andover takes more new 11th graders than other schools. Some schools only take 2 or 3 per year, while Andover takes around 30. Since FA is a concern, Andover should be on your radar. Andover is one of the few schools with need-blind admissions, meaning that they don’t look at your financial status when making admissions decisions. Most schools do look at how much tuition you can pay, so it’s harder for financial aid applicants to get in. I go to Andover on financial aid, and I can say that they are extremely extremely extremely generous. They gave me much more financial aid than my family was expecting.

Andover has a famous Economics program and is great in the Social Sciences. Our electives are like college level classes, and our Econ class goes through the AP syllabus in 2 terms rather than spending the whole year on it. Our Econ team is amazing and wins competitions. We also have an amazing debate team, mock trial, and tons of other social sciency things.

You should consider applying to boarding schools as a repeat sophomore. All boarding school take more new sophomores than new juniors, plus you’ll get a more full boarding school experience. It’s also much easier to integrate into the community as a new 10th grader than a new 11th grader.

Yes, it’s late to be starting the application process, but DS started even later and was accepted into a good school.

You should be taking the SSAT (it’s a different test than the SAT).

Keep in mind that while Andover is VERY generous with FA, it is also among the most competitive schools to get admitted to.

To determine which schools have the wherewithal to award generous FA, look at schools with large endowment per student:
Boarding Schools with the Highest Endowment Per Student (2023);

Don’t be afraid to apply. The worst they can do is say no. Not all boarding school students come from rich families. I certainly didn’t.

Why did you suddenly decide that you want to go to boarding school now? My biggest concern about your question is that you’re trying to escape from a problem at home or at your current school rather than applying to boarding school for specific, well thought out reasons related to your academic and personal development.
