I applied to the University of Central Florida, and to make a long story short the application was late. They just sent me a messaging saying
"You have been offered the option of enrolling for the spring term. If you choose to accept this offer, you may then continue enrollment for future terms. Once you accept this offer, you may attend another regionally accredited institution in the summer and/or fall semesters for no more than 11 total hours. If you choose to do so, please email uaoperations@ucf.edu and indicate the institution, the semesters you will be attending, and the total number of hours you will complete.
Completing more than 11 semester hours in the summer and/or fall could affect your admission offer to UCF."
I planned to move to Orlando in the Fall, and now I don not know what to do, because it says I can’t take more than 11 credit hours. I am going to contact UCF tomorrow, and will ask for more clarification.
I really do not know what to do and and would really like some advice on what to do.
Thank you
Why don’t you enroll at at local CC for not more than 11 hours during the fall, then move to UCF for the spring term. They have orientation all three terms (fall, spring, summer) and most likely some housing would open up. When you call them get good instructions on what CC’s would be acceptable to transfer the credits (I believe most would be) and whether you can rely on available housing.
Alternatively, you might work for summer and fall terms before starting in the spring. Your graduation would be put off an extra semester, unless you make up the work in the summer.
Good luck to you!
That was my plan, my parents and I were just worried about financial aid. I planned to take PreCalc, Chem 1, and Intro to Eng. They add up to 8 credits, but to get 75% financial aid I’ll need 9-11 credits
Thank you! @Mamelot
@Stedworth then add one more class for three credits or re-configure your general ed’s so that you are in the 9 - 11 credit window, thus satisfying both your financial aid requirements and the UCF limit.
Or just start your college career at UCF in the spring and work this summer and fall to save money for college. I’m not sure but the 11 credit thing is an OPTION, correct? They are saying “this is what you may do should you prefer to begin your college in the fall” but they aren’t saying you HAVE to do that. You should choose what’s best but do realize that you have a choice.
I was going to suggest the same thing - maybe pick up some gen-ed credits at Valencia or one of the other CCs next fall.
You could take ENC 1101 (College Comp 1) which I’m pretty sure is required at all the FL universities (or its equivalent). Chem 1 is 4 hours with the lab, and then do PreCalc (MAC 1140) for 3 hours. That gives you 10 hours.
You could save Intro to Eng for UCF spring.
Run all this by a UCF advisor just to be on the safe side.
Also be aware that once you take classes after high school graduation you lose your “first time in college” status in certain situations. Probably not a problem for you at UCF, but it could be at other schools where you might have access to scholarship $$$ etc. Doesn’t sound like an issue for you but just thought I’d throw it out there. As mentioned above you could just work next fall until you formally start at UCF.
Congratulations!
@Mamelot they are saying that because when I graduate I will have 60 dual enrollment credits with my AA. If I take more than 11, I’ll be considered a transfer student. @SouthFloridaMom9 I would take comp 1 but I have all my Gen Eds done. I didn’t know what I wanted to do until the last couple of months, so that’s why I’m not too far into Math or Chem.
Do you guys think I should just take Chem and Precalc? Or should I add a 3 credit class that would maybe be in my interest (computers, etc.)
Thanks for all the help!
@Stedworth OK I see your situation. And now I understand why you wouldn’t want to wait till spring to continue your education.
Do you know what your major will be (I’m assuming some type of engineering). You probably will be taking ALL your major courses at UCF and most likely some of the higher level pre-reqs. to satisfy admission to the major. So save the CC classes for entry-level pre-reqs (such as pre-calculus which of course is a must).
Here is the UCF catalog for 2015-16 (probably won’t change much for 2016-17). Take a look at the plan of study for your major and figure out which 3-4 credit courses satisfy progress toward completing your course requirements so that when you arrive at UCF you are hitting the ground running and well prepared for the higher level stuff.

Not sure about college of engineering but I know that in the College of Arts/Humanities they require 8 credit hours of foreign language. You might consider that if it’s required (that plus three credits of Pre Calc get you to 11).
Good luck!
I’m sorry @Stedworth - I didn’t realize you had your AA so of course you have finished College Comp 1.
Yes, in addition to Chem 1 and Precalc, there might be an elective related to your major that you could take. Definitely check out the course catalog. If at all possible please run it by a UCF advisor.
My son is dual enrolled in Intro to Physics at UF (PHY 2020?). He is enjoying the class and thought it would be good prep for the physics sequence he will need eventually.
Also, be careful that you don’t run too far over your credit requirements because there is some new rule in Florida about charging more for over-doing it with credits (please double check me on this though). ??
@Mamelot thank you so much! I’ll definitely look into it
@SouthFloridaMom9 I think if I go over 180 credits (I think) then they can charge up to double tuition. And that class looks interesting! I’ll look Into that.
Thank you guys so much!!
You’re very welcome and great job getting that AA!
You’re welcome @Stedworth. Good luck with everything and well done on getting those Gen-Ed’s out of the way already!
