OK, deep breath, my teachers have already sent my recommendation letters to ALL my regular decision schools and I haven't even touched any of the applications!! I am afraid these schools might discard the letters, as my application is not in and will not be in for about another month!!! HELP! Do you think all my colleges (some competitive ones) will start a file for me even if I have not even filled out any forms for their schools yet???!!!!!

yeah I need to know this too.

you need to chill......

as long as you are graduating this year, and the teacher recs give some indication of that, the colleges will start a file for you....

you're fine

You probably already sent your SAT scores too, right? They've started a file for you. The deadlines aren't until January. Chill. Or better yet, get cracking on those applications!

Don't worry about it. This is the custom for teachers at my school (they send off RD recs with early ones), and trust me, we don't have dozens of people who aren't going to college :D

The worst that could happen is that a college does lose a letter. They'll let you know or show you on the web, and you can ask your teacher(s) to resend them (even after the deadline). No biggie.

Supporting documents that arrive before an application are put in a miscellaneous credentials file. When an application arrives, a staffer goes through the file to look for anything that may have arrived early.

We don't start a file for every paper that comes to us. As you all can imagine, some people send us score reports by accident (by copying the wrong school code) and some send recs to all their schools, then get in early somewhere and don't apply anywhere during RD.

Anyway, no worries. We hold onto everything.

P.S. I only stumbled upon this thread because a student sent me a link. I would never have clicked on that thread title. Just something to consider if you're asking for advice on here...
