Help?!

I’m going to be a senior this year and I was wondering. Do you guys think a 1350 (640 verbal and 710 math) is too low for Stanford? I’m trying to go for early action. Even with good, solid, extra activities like internship at the Governor’s office?

Oh yeah. And I got a 2090 on the new SAT. I'm retaking them in October. Running it close to the deadline (Nov. 1).

With SAT scores alone it is hard to give you an answer. What are your stats.

Now I'm afraid to tell the truth, but yes, the scores are way below Stanford's average and unless the Governor is of California and says you are the most brilliant kid he's ever met, the scores are just plain too low!

Well actually I thought it would be boring to read it all but I guess you can’t tell without the stats huh. I’m from Hawaii, I go to a little private girl school with a full scholarship. I have a 3.98 and I’ve taken all the Aps that my school offers for the year, with As in all except one (English which I got an A- in). And I’ve done piano for a decade. I’ve done national piano auditions for four years. And I play keyboard in my church worship team, and also at a nursery home during the summer.
I speak Chinese fluently, and have a job teaching it to little kids because I want to be a pediatrician…which is why I’m volunteering at a preschool and for my pediatrician. I’ve done both since sophomore year and I love it.
As for SAT IIs, I have 670 in US History, 730 in Biology, and 710 in math IIC. I love math and I started the school math team. (Can you believe we didn’t have one! Unfair!) I’ve done varsity judo but I stopped this year because of the heavy workload in my classes. I’m a graduate of Center for Tomorrow’s leaders, a leadership program in Hawaii, and I’m also the youth representative for Lighthouse Leadership team. I’m vice-president of my grade, yearbook editor, and Passport (our school’s foreign language magazine) editor. I currently take two languages, Chinese and Japanese (which I’ve done for seven years). Recently I won first place in the Executive Women International Scholarship Program Hawaii Chapter and am in the National round, the results of which will come out in September.
This summer, I’m interning at the governor’s office and on the Honolulu Advertiser’s Youth Editorial Board. I’ve won the Young Writer’s Contest in Hawaii in the tenth grade and other awards like that. Hmmm…if I remember anything else, I’ll get back to you.

For my PSATs, going back to junior year, I was in the 96 percentile.

I know I’m not brilliant but going to Stanford would be awesome. But hey, even if I don’t get in, its not the end of the world and life will go on. :-)

Are you a minority?

You should talk a lot about your experience and passion involving kids. Apply to Stanfurd, but remember it is difficult to get into. Try to bring up your scores a little. Apply to other schools. Cornell is easier than Stanfurd. You should come to Berkeley. Try it out. Good luck though.

Nope, not a minority

Math won't be a problem to bring up. But verbal....ahhhhhh. Do you guys have any advice on how to improve my verbal score? Thanks.

Well... i'm more of a math person, so i'm in the same boat as you. Try prep books. I really dont know what else to say. Sorry.

Thanks :-)

Cant believe I'll find out by the end of this year....scary.

It really is. I myself applied to Stanfurd SCEA. Obviously I was rejected. Thank god, because i fell in love with Berkeley. Now i am forced to dislike Stanfurd. But hopefully you get in. You seem to want it a lot.

Yeah I do really want to get in but I'm not like expecting a lot. Berkley sounds cool too though. Its just that I've been wanting to go to Stanford since like, second grade. In second grade, I was like, "Oh please. SATs are going to be a piece of cake." HA! Funny how that turned out.

Yeah it is funny. But we'll see where you end up at. Like you i wanted to go there since i was young. " I want to go to Stanford to become a doctor!!" I'm still doing pre-med, but at Stanfurd's biggest rival.

Hmm....should I take the ACT?

Yeah try that. Some say it's easier. I thought it was harder, but that's just me. I probably had a bad day. You should try it. Try also to take another SAT II to make up for the 670 in USH. It's a good score, but you could get a better one.

Like what SAT II? Or should I just retake US History? Do you think the 670 would hurt if I got a 5 on the AP US exam? (I don't know if I did. I should find out in a month. It was hard though!)

How about telling us what you want to major in? I think you should go to an east coast school. Wellesley... tell your parents that madame chiang kai shek went there. Barnard is fantastic. I
m not sure if you want to go that far. What is wrong with University of Hawaii? it
s affordable and close to home.

It might hurt a little. If you are sure you can bring it up, retake it, but think about taking another one too. They want to see how good you are in all subjects. Try a language. You said you know Chinese and Japanese. I dont know if there are tests for those, but check.

Yeah there are tests for that. But idk how well I'd do in Japanese and I don't want to take Chinese cuz I speak it fluently! Why not challenge yourself right? (I'm not a dork I'm not a dork I'm not a dork. Haha) Anyway, yeah I was thinking about East Coast too. Its just that California is so much closer to home...and I won't have to sit on the plane for so loooooong. Although I like their snacks and the movies. Hmmmmmmm. BUT THE FOOD! UGH. Well I'm definitely going to apply to other colleges like WashU, Pepperdine, Cornell, John Hopkins, etc. And as for University of Hawaii, nothing wrong with it. I just really really really really really (x a gazillion) not wanna go there. Hawaii's awesome but I want to get out.

What are you majoring in? That has a major affect on the school's decision
